I am pretty good with electronics having fixed countless devices over the years.
I have the 21.5" late 2012 iMac where the ram is in the back. 8GB is not enough for what I do.. I work with a lot of memory intensive programs. I've basically been neglecting my iMac as I upgraded my 2010 MBP and it runs like a champ and can handle things. Except now with my MBP I'm having some battery issues.
I'm afraid of losing both computers and being forced to buy a new one... so that's the backstory and here is my issue with upgrading:
My iMac fell off my desk a few weeks ago. Some pretty bad dents in the aluminum body, shattered glass and LCD. I do not plan on replacing any of that as I hooked it up to an extra gaming monitor I had is not only larger but just feels much better than the original display.
I bought 16GB ram for the iMac and have been putting off the install. The other day I decided to try it out. I can lift the bottom easily with those high quality suction cups as thats not cracked. I have been able to remove most of the adhesive around the edges. But the top corners have so many small shards of glass and the bent aluminum has made it really hard to get that part off... So after only lifting the glass at the bottom maybe 1/4" inch I gave up. The computer seemed to struggle to boot up and I figured something went wrong but I got it finally.
So now I am yet even more afraid to continue this project and damage any internal components, or even being able to get this shattered screen off successfully without any issues. I also figured that if I do get inside, I might as well do an SSD upgrade.. but with 1TB almost used up already this is turning into quite an expensive upgrade for a machine that beat.
And if I did get the screen removed, I would put just a piece of plexiglass over there with some 3m tape or something along the edges to protect the internals obviously.
Crazy and likely idiotic idea:
So it seems like the ram slots are behind the logic board in the back.. if I can measure out this properly and basically cut open the back of the computer maybe I could have a much easier install without removing any components. It would just take extreme caution to cut through the aluminum frame not to damage anything internally. Is this crazy or maybe even a good idea?
Other Ideas:
Between doing 16GB RAM and the 850 PRO on my 2010... and now possibly a new battery or it.. and then possibly doing the iMac upgrade.. I wonder if it is just time to buy new?
Or maybe I just deal with the 8GM of RAM in the iMac and keep the standard drive and just deal with it. Thoughts? I realize everyone is different and has different uses and needs for their computers so its tough to really make a call, just figured since I'm going nuts over my indecisiveness I would like to hear what others would do in my shoes.
