If you are gong on what you heard, I think the safest bet is the 6s+, and you can probably get one for a good deal.

Your best bet is to go to the apple store and check out the cameras. I like the photos that come out the camera on my max, both back and front cameras. I haven't yet played around the camera on our xr yet. But I think the 6s + should be fine. It's just that apple has steadily been making the cameras better and the 6s is just okay in low light photos.

Not sure what “airbrush” look people are talking about, other than noise reduction at work.

Having seen the XR in action, I actually found the selfies to be a lot better than my 6S. The smart HDR definitely helps a lot in getting better colors.

As for the rear facing camera, I find the XR to be excellent compared to my 6S. Again, the smart HDR can capture shadow highlight details that are completely missing on my 6S.

Sounds to me that you don’t like the smart HDR feature/noise reduction algorithm if the A12’s ISP. Unless Apple tune the algorithm differently in future OS updates, just go back to the 8+. The smart HDR is a new feature of the A12. Apple don’t usually change things on the older phones despite anecdotal comments. A lot of the features in the photography of iPhone relies on the ISP hardware.

Well the XR is the first iPhone I’ve had that is capable of taking photos of my dog without smudging his fur, because it confuses the camera system.. and that includes the iPhone 8.

So in mind it’s an excellent camera.

If you don’t like it though, go back to an 8 Plus otherwise you’ll just continue to be annoyed by it.

Hey to each their own. I’ve been really impressed with the photos on my XR. Only complaint is I wish Apple incorporated computational algorithms for Portrait mode on anything the way Google has on the Pixel 3.

If you want a good camera in a phone, why did you buy an iPhone in the first place?
Nothing is bad about the camera in the iPhone. There are certainly better cameras in the competitor phones, but the iPhone camera still looks great. What a hot take.

Well, my XS Max is more than happy to expose all my wrinkles, pores, imperfections, etc, when I take a selfie. I don't seem to be benefiting from any 'airbrush' post processing.

I have noticed that the front facing camera on my Xs makes skin tones whiter and everything is washed out. That’s why I don’t use it. The cameras on the back are amazing though. Much better than the iPhone 7 that I was using.

Compared to the iPhone X that I had for about a week, the Xs back camera is amazing. In low light, you can still get great photos. The iPhone X can’t do that. I was not able to wait for the 2019 iPhones but you might want to because the cameras should be getting an upgrade.
