23" Cinema Display

Hey, I have decided to try and get a HD screen. It seems like things are all going that way. I was wondering what people thought of the Apple 23" display?


How much better is the display over the 20"?

Does HD make that much difference?

Can one watch HD films on a non HD screen?

I know that the design of the Apple screens is great but does anyone have any suggestion for other non Apple displays that are HD> Like I really like the way that some of the NEC displays can be turned into portriat mode.. is this supported under OSX?

Also do people think the Apple displays are a bit old now? It seems that they havent been updated for ages? Surely other makes will be more up to date?

actually the Cinema Displays were just updated not too long ago.*

there are Dell monitors that are very similar in screens, that are priced a lot cheaper, especially with online coupons.*

i personally have a 20" Dell that was said to have the same screen as the 20" Cinema. it works good and all, but i wish i would have gotten the Apple, even though i only paid like $430 over a year ago for a 20" widescreen and Apple is still way over that price

Yeah yeah i get your point. The ACD's do look dope.

I havent heard anything about the bleeding backlight or anything?? Anyone else on that one?

Also I dont think there is much point in not getting a HD ready screen. With all movies going that way and HD video production a non HD screen seems dated. The resolution is also a huge benifit for the desktop space. Workign with huge resolution files in PS will be so much better.

Has anyone seen a recent review of the Apple 23 inch screen? All the review I have read seem to be pretty old and the screens have been updated so the reviews are not really valid. Link me if you've seen one.

My new one doesn't suffer from that.

The first one I got suffered from Image Persistency, so they treated it as Dead on Arrival.

It may just be me but the new one I got looks better than the first, so I am not complaining

My 23" is wonderful. It's a monitor I'd recommend to anyone. 1080p looks beautiful on it.

That's also a perspective but I think the heavy Mac users are more than willing to pay extra for the design (and comfort) of the Apple Cinema Display than an (in some way) equivalent Dell screen. Aesthetics play are role these days.

Beautiful design will cost more money.

I have gone through 3 23" ACD's all of them have had backlight bleeding.

I am pretty sure every ACD has a hint of this. Other than that, there arent any notable issues.

i've had my 23ACD for 2 years and it still works fine, no bleeding or anything. This thing is a lot tougher than my old 17inch ADC.

PS: the 20" is also high def, they just dont say it so you will go buy the more expensive 23" or 30". you can watch hd video on most any screens as long as your computer can handle it.

you can watch HD video on any screen, but it won't be the native resolution. to have the native resolution, you gotta get the 23" or bigger.

one reason i wished i had gotten the ACD us b/c this Dell just feels "cheap" and it was. you always get what you pay for.....always

My new 23 ACD has some backlight bleeding. Don't really notice it unless looking at dark backgrounds... like watching a DVD. It's also got some issues with ghosting. If I run certain screen savers or there is a lot of motion on a dark background, you can see the ghosting.

I'm thinking of taking mine back. I hate the thought of getting something worse... like maybe dead pixels? But I paid a lot for this and want it close to perfection as possible. I was thinking I might not take it back, that maybe I was being too picky? Then I saw other 23's at the Apple store and they were perfect. Why can't I have a perfect one too?

I have recently got a 23" ACD, and i'm amazed at how good it is. Not a dead pixel at all, and like the others said, it looks like the dogs...

HD video is amazing on it - and when I compare it side by side to my old tft (19" Viewsonic ~ 5 months old) the viewsonic looks awful!

I'd highly recommend it. You can pay less for a dell etc, but you get the firewire/usb hub on the acd, as well as the option to make the computer sleep from the button on the screen...

I love the ACDs but I just cant justify that pricing. And my dual monitor set up with 2 20inch dells gets the job done just as fine as the Apple.

They were updated in August, and hopefully most of the issues are now fixed.

I got a 23" Cinema Display on July 1st, and had it back to apple 3 times for the same image persistence issues, the last time it actually came back with a loose LCD panel (I could shake the bezel and the screen would audibly whack into the casing).

It also had something like 7 stuck pixels, most of them in the center of the monitor. I had a very difficult time with apple support, and ended up convincing the manager at the store I bought the LCD from to take it back even though it was outside the 14 day period, which took a lot of hassling as well.

This was ridiculous mainly because I reported the problems to Apple within the return window, and had sent the thing in 3 times without result! The first time I did get a new LCD panel installed to fix the pixel issues, but they gave me the OLDER version of the panel which had clearly lower contrast and response time vs. the one I brought home with me.

I love apple's computers, but I'm never again going to buy a monitor from them. That silver bezel isn't worth the hassle, especially on an LCD which is something that I'm very picky about.

I ended up going with a 3007WFP which is due to arrive today. I'll deal with the dell logo, especially since it came with a 3 year advance-exchange warranty (which apple does NOT do, even WITH applecare), and accidental damage coverage.

I believe Dell also sends out brand new LCDs within 21 or 30 days of your purchase, instead of sending refurbished ones like Apple does. If you have a problem with your new Dell LCD, you call them up and they ship you a new one, then you send back the old one. Apple does not do this.
