Hi, i don't get any notifications for incoming mail when the app is not running (quit), only when it's running in the background or when i'm re-launching the app. This is working fine for iMessage, etc. so it's basically "just" the Mail app that behaves like this.
My iOS devices have no problems receiving push notifications with quitted apps either.
Notifications are on and set the same as for similar (and working) apps in the system settings.
tried cycling focus off and on, but no help
changing mail settings from auto search for new mail to the other options didn't help either.

any idea?

I've been using Macs since the G3 iMac (long long ago). During all that time, Apple Mail has never given messages for incoming mail when it isn't running. You could leave it running in the background, if you want notiifcations, or you could use your iPhone (if you have one) to provide notifications for Apple Mail. It's easy to have Mail start up every time you log in to your account. Would that work?

thanks... i'm not exactly sure... but i think it was working before. but i only started last year with 12.0 or 12.1 and most of the time i'm using email on my phone or tablet before i reach for my laptop, so i just might imagine things.

of course i could leave it running, but i'm a CMD+Q guy that quits everything unless i really need more than the current app(s), but i won't... for OCD reasons ;) ... and it actually looks more like a bug to me as it's working on my phone and tablet and also for iMessages on my Macbook for completely closed apps

I also like to close apps I'm not using, but macOS handles notifications differently than the iPhone does in this regard. So the behavior you see is expected and you'll have to choose which you prefer...

Another alternative would be to sun a script that opens Mail ever 15 or 30 minutes (if not already open), at which time you'll be notified about new mail. Then you can CMD+Q Mail and know it will open again in however long you want it to. Just a thought.

thanks, but i think i'll leave it this way if this is indeed normal behavior.
i'm still getting notified on my other devices and if i'm waiting for something specifically, i can as well just open the app to see if something new came in.
