24" Alu iMac, harddrive problems?

I bought this on in the summer of 2008, but I don't know the exact model number.
I have OS X and Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it with Boot Camp, and the OS X partition has been painfully slow for quite a while (around the time I upgraded to Snow Leopard, which made me blame the OS at first). From one point on, it always took forever to delete the Trash and other things like that, and now, most of the time it won't even boot anymore.
The Linux side of things works like a charm mostly, with a few minor errors and a constant warning that the harddrive "has many bad sectors" and should be replaced immediately.
Now, two questions:
One, can I trust Ubuntu with this assessment, and will replacing the harddrive fix all my problems?
Two, does anyone know of a good guide, and most importantly, what size Torx screwdrivers do I need?

Did both, didn't change a thing. OS X never acknowledged that the disk was faulty.
 
I have the same model and my drive is starting to go, so I'm swapping it out this weekend. I've seen a few guides online, just google Aluminum iMac hard drive upgrade guide.

You'll need a T6 and T9 from what I've read.
 
I've already reinstalled OS X, it didn't change anything. I've bought a 1TB Caviar Green already, so there's now way around an HDD swap.
Unfortunately my Torx screwdriver set only goes down to T10 :(
 
My HD on my 2007 20" iMac went bad after a few years as well and used the ifixit guide to replace it.

Although this is for the 20", the 24" should be exactly the same. You'll need torx size 6 and 8 (got mine from Home Depot for under 10), and don't forget suction cups and a can of compressed air. The hardest part is just getting the bezel to separate from the casing - it's easier to push it apart from the bottom corners.

You might want to run an Apple Hardware Test just to make sure there isn't anything else that is wrong (my HD fan crapped out as well, and had to replace it too).

I also have the 24 model you have and my drive did some funky things. I just picked the puter up from the apple store with a NEW drive. lost quite a bit and nothing gave me a hint it was the drive. well, guess I will learn to back up now since after all these years, my luck ran out.
 
My wife's harddrive in her late 2007 iMAC died very recently as well. She was having freezes, and corrupted iphoto database at times. I did everything I could think to fix it. Ended up with a corrupt B-Tree according to fsck. Repartition, reformat, reinstall, and still wouldn't work. Even at times the drive wasn't detected.

Luckily I bought Apple Care for the iMACs. I called in trouble ticket last night, and 9 minutes total on the phone I have an appointment with the Genious' tonight. It was nice talking to someone that didn't have an accent on the phone ;)

AL2TEACH, how long did you have to wait on the replacement drive?
