Can you say Chi-City??
I'm going back and forth about replacing my old Powerbook G4 with either a new 20" iMac or 24" iMac. I'm aware that the 24" has a higher quality display (not to mention much larger), although I would really like to utilize the 20" Dell 2005FPW I have.

Does anyone have a 24" iMac setup with a 20" external display connected? I'd love to see some pictures if possible, but really any thoughts/comments would be appreciated...

What do you use your mac for?

I know for me... On my MBP (I know you're looking for iMac comparsion) but I do a lot of photo editing as I'm a photographer.
On one screen I'd have Aperture open and on the other I'd use photoshop.

For general use maybe you could have mail, itunes open on one screen and full screen internet on the other?

It's not necessarily the screen real estate I'm worried about (I currently use CS3, final cut studio, some audio programs, plus general stuff spanned from my Powerbook to my external monitor), but how a 24" iMac and a 20" display would look side by side.

Seriously, go for the 24". You can't upgrade that shiz in the future and believe me.... it. is. Glorious.

When I see the 20" in the Apple Stores now even more pleased with my purchase of the 24".

Here is a picture of my 24" iMac and a 22" Samsung SyncMaster monitor. I love the extra real estate.

Hey, out of curiosity, that Drobo unit ... Is it the one with the network connection to allow you to share the storage as a SAN unit?

Here's a picture of my 17" that I kept from my old Mac Mini.

I keep my email/chat/minimised iTunes window on the 17" and my customer database/accounting software/web browser windows on the main screen. The second screen is tops - I wish I'd done it years ago!

Can't say that my setup looks great, but it works for me.

Hah, I have the same two you do. The Samsung is a 226bw I believe. Didn't like the stand on it so I ordered a cheap adjustable Dell stand off ebay and put it on. The 24" iMac with an additional 22" works great.

Seems to be exactly that. You can also connect the Drobo to a machine on your network via USB2 or FW800 (Rev.2 only) and export it that way.

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it.

The 24" + smaller external display doesn't look as awkward as I had originally envisioned, so I'm basically set on getting a 24" iMac.

However, I will be waiting until after Christmas in anticipation of some sort of bump at Macworld.

It doesn't look like this now, but a few months back....

I have the same set up, 24" imac and dell 2005fpw. sorry no pics, but it works well for me. the dell is off to the side and mainly used for watching video. The problem for me is constantly resizing windows if I move them from one monitor to the other and the noticeable difference in brightness btw the two monitors. Since the dell adjusts by height, physically, it doesnt look too bad since they are both even.

if you raise the Dell monitor it will probably line up with the iMac's screen but then IMO it will look ugly sitting up really high like that. you could sit it on a book or make some kind of shelfing for it to sit on liek mpshay did. you could even use this same idea for the 24" LED display which will match the iMac the most.

I've got an external 17" screen, that I originally bought with my Mini, connected to my 24" iMac (Adobe apps really NEED the extra screen space...). I've still got the Mini which I still use headless and can connect to it via screen share with one machine on each screen. Although it's not a pro system as such, it's very cool and makes me feel like a Mac God!!! :D

Will look to upgrade to a 20" or 22" soon.

As an aside, as I have the dock located at the bottom of the iMac's screen, I've got the second screen aligned along the bottom. Do people here have preference as to whether the screens line up top or bottom?

I have the 24" 3.06 and a 20" Benq LCD DVI. I just had to get the proper adapter. The Benq looks nothing like or as good as the iMac 24. Now I will be forced to upgrade the Benq to a nice 22" LCD. Maybe an Acer. Price and quality is important.

I'm have a 20" iMac, a 22" Samsung LCD, a 22" ASUS LCD and a 17" Dell LCD. Was thinking of hooking up 2 22" LCD to the iMac to have awesome real estate. One on each side but does anyone know how i can get this done? or if it's possible? Thanks.

display quality of picture and durability... IMac VS LG 2600

LG W2600H-PF Black 25.5' 5ms Widescreen. I paid $400 for it, but I have a few days to return it.
It does not have a web cam so I would buy my own. For quality, $ and compatibility would I be better of buying the iMac. Or go with the Mac Pro with the LG and buying a web cam if I needed it. I have never used a web cam.
I am thinking for long term durability, upgradeability, cost and hassle over time the single 2.8 Mac Pro with the GeForce 8800 maybe the way to go. Tell me if I am wrong and why.
I was in the Apple store and we paused a dark seen in the movie IRON MAN and the top of the line 24 iMac was horrible. The MacBook Pro was much better, the MBP was even better than the plasma they had.
