Greetings...I purchased a 24" Aluminum iMac in November. I was double checking the SuperDrive to see that it can burn a Dual Layer DVD+r (via the "About this Mac" Burner section)...and I see that it cannot burn a DL. My July 2007 MacBook Pro has a superdrive that can burn a DL DVD.

So I wanted to check with other Aluminum iMac owners...Does your 24: iMac Aluminum have a superdrive that can burn a DL? Could I need some sort of firmware update? or is the DL-capable Superdrive only available on the 24" with the 2.6 ghz processor?

I was thinking of calling Apple to complain.

Comments...thoughts appreciated.

I will check my 20" iMac once I get home, it better support DL otherwise back to the store, I need DL support

I am at work and will post this evening when I get home...However...no where on the "Disk Write" line does mine save "DL".

I had burnt a dual layer DVD within 30 mins of receiving my new 24" Alu iMac, so I can tell you it will 100% sure burn them!

Mine does (2008 model)

Looks like all Aluminum iMacs can burn Dual Layers. You are probably looking at the wrong thing. Why don't you actually try to burn a dual layer disk?

2007 24" Alum iMac
Slot-loading 8X "SuperDrive" with 4X double-layer burning (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) "writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed, writes DVD-RW at up to 6x and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed, and reads CDs at up to 24x speed."

2008 24" iMac
Slot-loading 8X "SuperDrive" with 4X double-layer burning (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) "writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed, writes DVD-RW at up to 6x and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed, and reads CDs at up to 24x speed."

Just checked & even my white 24" iMac can;

Vendor Product Rev
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J FCQA

Interconnect: ATAPI
SupportLevel: Apple Shipping
Cache: 2048k
CD-Write: -R, -RW, BUFE, CDText, Test, IndexPts, ISRC
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW, BUFE, Test
Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

So your newer model should be ok.

I'm retarded...

I just looked again at the "DVD-Write:" value in the Disc Burning section of system profiler...here's what it showed.

Firmware Revision: FM0S
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

I swear I did not see the DL on Sunday...Getting too old...too blind...too mentally challenged.

Sorry for the Chicken Little...

Thanks for the comments.

No worries.. sh*t happens.

I've found that sometimes System Profiler information isn't correct.. that's why I dug up that command.
