24" iMac - Dead Pixels

My new 24" 2.93 1tb iMac arrived today after ordering it March 3rd.

Everything is great about it except for a cluster (like 8-10) of dead pixels in the upper right of the screen.

This bugs me, so I want to the it replaced.

My question is how does Apple go about replacing computers?
Do I get a new one first then send back the old, so I am not with out a computer for a week?

Also do I send everything back with all the accessories or just the physical computer?

Call AppleCare. They will either have you send in the computer (after sending you a box), replace the screen, then send the computer back. Or you can take it to an Apple Store, and they may be able to replace the screen in store. Or, option 3, if you are within the 15 days, return the computer to the store where you bought it, tell them why and have them replace it.

I would definitely contact Apple about getting a new one.

My 20 inch iMac has 1 dead pixel, and I'm considering replacing it as I'm still within the 14 day period. I know it's just one, but it keeps catching my attention in small annoying ways.

The policy on pixels is not exactly clear cut.

I've heard some people being able to get a new machine with only one dead pixel. Others have said the magic number is 5. I've heard others say 8. Some say that if the pixels are dead, the magic number is 5, but 8 if they're only stuck. Some say that you need more than 2 per million pixels to count.

Maybe it just depends on how nice the Apple rep is feeling when you speak to her/him.

As you're in the 14 day return period, technically, you can return it for any reason whatsoever. You'll just have to deal with a restocking fee, or see if you can get it lowered/eliminated because you're returning due to a defect rather than preference.

My only personal worry is that the replacement might be just as bad, if not worse...this is something I'm debating right now, but then again I only have one dead pixel...not several like you have.

Thanks for the kind words! Getting a new computer sent out, then shipping my old one back. Worked out nicely!

this is my 5th mac purchased, none of the others had a single dead pixel.

You should get it replaced. The first iMac i got had a dead pixel and i called the day after i got it and Apple replaced it for me and today i recieved a new one, without any dead pixels

I also purchased a newly released 24'' iMac (3.06 GHz) on March 3rd from the online Apple Store and it had a dead pixel. I called Apple support to report the problem and they are sending me a replacement. It was a completely painless process with no questions asked. I should have my replacement sometime next week (The new iMac will ship when Apple receives the defective one). I'm not sure if me and the folks on here have just had some bad luck, or it is a sign of a more widespread problem. Whatever the cause, Apple was very proactive in resolving the dead pixel issue.

I wonder what Apple will do with all screen returned due to dead pixels.... Thrown them away to increase e-waste or somehow managed to use them for something else.

The LCD manufacturing specification can't be free from dead-pixel, while consumers expect 100% free dead/stuck-pixel.

It's rhetoric but what a question spinning in my head

PS: I live with a 2-year thinkpad T60 that has a bright dead pixel. It's annoying but as long it's tolerable, I"ll take it.
