So Im going to get an 24'' imac because I absolutely fell in love with mac after getting a MBP for my high school graduation present. So I sold my 4 year old HP (1.xx processor, 512 ram, nvidia geforce 7800 graphics card) that I used for a racing game online. This game requires a decent amount of fps (around 60 - 100) to run good. My old HP got around 70 - 90 but hated it because it was a PC :p. So Im planning on getting a 2.8 ghz 24'' imac.

My question to you guys is... will the nvidia card be worth it for me (its only a $135 upgrade with the student discount)? and will the game run better than my old piece of **** HP?

Thanks so much guys

get the 8800. Snow Leopard will most likely make use of it when it is released and it's much better for 3d games. Not so much for normal desktop apps right now however, but it just about as good as the 2600 for desktop stuff.

Well, you'll get better results with the Nvidia card than the ATI one. And in the long term will be the better investment. If you got the money, I'd say go with the N.

thanks for the speedy replies! that kinda what I was thinking, does anyone know how the nvidia 8800 stands up to my old geforce 7800?

Get the nVidia even though they are having some issues that are apparent under Safari and FireFox while holding the scroll bar and scrolling up or down where a horizontal like would be flickering whenever you scroll, but I am sure there would be a fix for this through a new driver or so.

What I'd like to know is this...

If I pull up a photo from my Flickr account on a 24in having the NVIDIA card, will it look better, worse or the same as on an iMac having the ATI card?

Can't find a shop where I live in the UK with both machines in it for comparison...

I'm pretty sure it will look the same with either card.

I used to say get the HD 2600 but now I say get the 8800GS. It's going to be worth it in the long run. :)

Getting a 2600 is like buying a brand new BMW and using your old honda civic '90 4 seasons tires

Last night I ordered my 24" iMac and I choose the nvidia. Its better then the ATI and they have put it as an upgrade option for a reason... my guess is future support and a possible switch over to nvideo from ATI.
