Hello, I was hoping Apple would announce a bumped spec iMac this fall but it doesn't sound like that is going to happen. Both my wife and I have M1 MacBooks. I have a 13" MBP with 16gb ram and 1tb ssd. My wife has a MacBook Air. We both are very happy with these laptops but would like a larger monitor. She does hobby level laser and Cricut design and I am just starting to mess around with video editing fpv drone footage. Both would benefit from a the larger screen and external keyboard/mouse. Now here is where it gets sticky...and expensive.
Logic would be to get a good monitor 24"-27" and a dock to work with the machines we have. My MBP is plenty powerful anything I want and was purchased to somewhat future-roof knowing I wanted to get into home video editing. I didn't realize how annoying it would be to edit video on the smaller screen real estate. The "problem" is this setup would live in the front room of our house where everyone who comes over has to first walk in to. The desk we would use is set up so that when sitting you are facing out to the room and the back of any monitor would be facing guests. My wife doesn't want everyone to see the back of the monitor with a bunch of wires hanging out...like the typical home office has so we are looking for a minimalist "nice" design. First world problems, I know.
I have looked at different monitors and feel we are spoiled by Apple's design and quality. There are some non apple monitors out there that could work, but the scaling issues of making things too small, blurry, or taxing on the machines power has me a bit cautious. Plus, I just want to be able to plug it in and just have it work. So, unless someone has another thought in my mind that leaves a Studio display or an iMac.
My wife really likes the look of the iMac along with the fact it will be just one wire coming out of the back. She also likes that the one wire is easy to unplug and hide away when not in use, if we want. It looks great from the back too...I actually think the back of the colored iMacs looks better than the front.
So, I think the iMac is the direction we will probably go. I have been messing around with various video editing software (iMovie, Davinci free) and think I may try Final Cut. It is Apple ecosystem, which I know, and should work great with M1 powered machines. My daughter is in college and can qualify for the $199 Pro Apps Bundle so I can save a lot of money there.
This all gets down to the question for the forum and that is...am I going in the right direction for what I want to do? f I go iMac should I get 8gb or 16gb? If I go 8GB and it just isnt enough I know I am stuck with it, but I could conceivably offload the file to my MBP and work it there. I would be great if I could use my MBP through the iMac as a monitor but I do not think that is easily done. I am looking at either 512 or 1tb of storage. Not too worried there as external drives are an easy option. My MBP with 1TB storage is hardly even used. What little video editing I have done I just discarded the files once things were finalized.
Any ideas on a clean looking minimalist setup for a separate monitor to use with our existing MacBooks?
Thank you...I clearly suffer from analysis paralysis and need a kick in one direction or another.
