24" iMac - Resolution

The 1920 x 1200 resolution results in type that is too small for me to read comfortably, especially on the menu.

Since I can find no way to adjust the fonts used by OS X, I've set the screen resolution to 1344 x 840, i.e., one step down from 1900 x 1200. 1344 x 840 is fine for me but will it do any damage to my screen?

It's not going to do damage, it's just going to look like garbage not running at an LCD's native resolution. Basically you are taking 1344 x 840 and scaling it to 1920

Your best option is to use the 'resolution independence' feature in leopard, but be warned it's very buggy (which is why it's only available as a test option for developers so far). If you can live with the messy finder and your other apps work OK with it though, it's brilliant - you keep the 'proper' 1900x1200 resolution, everything looks very crisp and sharp, but everything is bigger (and you get to choose how much bigger too).

I wrote a quick guide to getting it working on the forum here a month or two back, or a quick bit of googling should give you answers.

I posted this in another sub forum (Apple Games) but I think it applies here as well.

Thinking of converting from a Windows PC to an iMac. One thing I have been curious about is this...

Does the 20" or 24" iMac support 1:1 pixel mapping or scaling? By this I mean, if you run a game in a lower res than the native res of the LCD, will the LCD stretch the image to fit its native res and thus making the image more pixelated or will you get the black bars on each side to preserve the quality of the image? I know Nvidia's drivers support pixel mapping if your LCD does not but I'm pretty sure ATI's do not have this feature so hoping the LCD supports it.

It always gets scaled to fill the screen from what I've seen. On windows, anyway - on OSX some apps have the black borders, but they usually have an option to scale too, and most apps scale by default.

You'll probably get black borders at the sides though if you run anything that's not widescreen - osx seems to do a good job of recognising that and not stretching the picture.

24 inch Display Resolution...what should it be

Apologies for hijacking your thread Toner but need a little help too.
Am new to Mac and just got a nice pressie of the imac with 24 inch display.
Somehow i have managed to change the resolution of the display and now the font is way bigger and my pics don't look right.Does anyone know what resolution the displays are shiped out at,ie factory setting????? It looked pefect but now it just doe's not look right.Think im going to be useing this forum alot in the future!!

It's the highest resolution choice in preferences.
