I replaced my 2015 27" with a 8/512gb 24" over a year ago, it's seemed good until I got a 14" 16/1TB MacBook Pro this week. It's over twice as fast, nicer screen and colours, and pro motion makes going back to the iMac jarring.
If was replacing the 27" iMac now would get the 14" and a studio display.
Thoughts?

The Studio Display doesn't have Pro Motion though. So, it would still be "jarring."

I have a 2020 27" iMac and a 14" MBP. The MBP certainly has a better display but I still use my 27" iMac on a daily basis, along side my 14" Pro. I certainly notice the 60hz vs 120hz, but it still works well and looks good.

Oh didn't know that with the studio display. My iMac is in my home office so will still get plenty of use.
Big difference though.

So you’re saying if you spend twice as much for the macbook and extra $1500 for the monitor it will actually outpeform a $1300 iMac?
I am shocked.
iMac 24 was made for basic users and some heavy work here and there thanks to m1. But nothing more.
Macbook Pro is on another level and definitely on another budget category.

What's 'average' about it?

You're getting a 4.5K P3 display (that is better than the previous generation iMac), a nice range of colours, amazingly thin enclosure and a SoC that can outperform many mid to high-end PC counterparts.

The MacBook Pro is intended for professionals, hence the better specs. And you would also be paying significantly more one plus a Studio Display than an iMac.

I find the iMac great value and after deciding your performance need, I think you should compare it with the other M1 computers and not the 14”/16” MacBook Pro and the Mac Studio.

Especially with the new M2 MacBook Air price hike, I find it holds its value even more.
Probably later this year we’ll see a spec bump to M2 and maybe an M2 pro chip?

As for promotion and mini led, adding those would jump the price to over 2.000 USD easily.

Personally I would have kept the 2015 27" iMac a while longer, if it had an SSD boot drive that is. I wouldn't do stuff like complex video editing on it though.

Both are VERY different machines. iMacs are great for many people who just want a thin desktop for office style work, some basic media work, internet, etc.

MacBook Pros are little mobile powerhouses that are meant to be used and abused with lots of higher end work (not that iMacs can't do higher end work, they'll just do it much slower).

I don't know your use case or what kind of work you do on a computer but if you don't need the power/portability of a MacBook Pro you could be over spending (which is fine if you have the budget).

Probably but I got the 14" 16/1Tb for 20% off, air 2 same config would of been same amount.
Wanted good screen, speakers, ports, pro motion, not so much the power, and yes to use out of my home/office.

Nah had the screen replace twice for pink tinge, also got a good price for it and only cost me $500AU to upgrade the the 24". 27" was the 2TB fusion.

The iMac 24" seems "average"... compared to the brand new MacBook Pro for sure. This is due to the fact that the iMac is made for everyone who wishes to get a Mac, which is not the case for the new MacBook Pro (much more expensive and purposely made for pro users who want the best Apple has to offer: better connectivity, best screen of the world, powerful chips...). But like it has been said, there is no point in comparing the iMac with the MacBook Pro.
