I have a 24" iMac which is just over 12 months old. I noticed recently that occasionally the iMac emits a short burst of grey noise, a sort of hissing which distorts whatever sound is being emitted at the time, (music or whatever). This happens at no particular time and when running no particular program. I have tested it with external speakers and also headphones to confirm that it is not the built in speakers that are causing the problem. The sound burst usually lasts just a couple of seconds. It is not particularly loud and is something I can live with. Anyone had this problem?

Also recently the same machine has suffered from occasional kernel panics. Usually after being on for some time. Again at no particular time or process. If I restart the computer it often panics again. If I leave it off for a while it seems ok, I am wondering if this is some sort of heat issue.

Here is an iStat picture I took after about 20 mins running. The temp I was wondering about was the bottom one in the list.

Northbridge - 55c

Edit: That has now risen to 60c

Forgive my ignorance what are the 2 Northbridges? Are they the ram slots?

Not quite.

And those temperatures are normal for the Northbridge.

If you get another Kernel Panic, it would be nice if you can post a copy of the information that little pop-up has after the machine restarts.

Right, it's been a month or so, but had 2 panics in quick succession last night. Here are the reports.

Normally this part would say it all, but for some reason doesn't. That could indicate a hardware problem
more importantly, why haven't you updated to snow leopard? its $29 and bound to smooth out a lot of problems

OK, thanks for that input:

Here are a few samples of more going back over the months.

There are about 20 panics listed over the last 4 months or so. A reference to "thetube" has come up in several of them. It is software on my system which controls a USB TV receiver. The software has a helper in the start-up items. Could this be the culprit? The panics have occurred when the USB receiver is not connected, but the software is always on obviously.

Regarding Snow Leopard, I did not install it because there were some issues with its handling of fonts. I occasionally use my comp to do some Graphic Design work when at home, I need the consistency with my work-based systems.

I'll just quote myself, and fix your post, in my quote at least!

OK, thanks for that input:

Here are a few samples of more going back over the months.

yes it could, do you get them when the tv dongle is not connected?

Yeah, it has had a panic when USB dingle un plugged. Could the software itself be the problem though?

Btw, sorry to be ignorant, what are code tags?
