Looking to purchase a new 24-inch iMac. What’s the likelihood of a refresh this year (M2?) Not sure if I should hold out or just get one now.

I'm in the same boat as you. I think there will be an M2 in 2022, just not sure when.

If rumors are correct it seems the M2 chip will launch perhaps by summer and with it a refresh over the rest of the year of the Macbook Air, Mac Mini, Macbook Pro 13 inch and iMac 24 to use it. The M2 will have a 8 core CPU like the M1 (but with efficiency improvements) and the GPU will jump from 7/8 cores (M1) to 9/10 cores. It will not be as fast as the M1 Pro but faster than the M1. This implies the M2 isn't a huge jump over the M1 but an incremental improvement.

Very likely - probably in summer or fall. Of the base M1 macs, the iMac was updated te last but i think apple will update it alongside either or both the MacBook Air update or the Mac mini update (which are both expected to be redesigne)

now I got mine only a month ago and I love it

I'm same as you, are you going to take the plunge and get one? I'm going for green with 16GB if I do..
It would actually be for my mom, who is currently using a 10-year-old iMac. She needs an upgrade. Would be orange, 16GB, 256GB storage (everything is in iCloud), and probably keyboard with numeric keypad.

She doesn’t NEED an M2 chip. I just figure M2 models would replace the M1 models and stay the same price, so why not? But I don’t think it’s worth waiting 6+ months for. Likely wouldn’t even notice any difference in performance.

My hope is they would release a version similar in specs to a Macbook Pro that isn't in a goofy color.

Matte black and everyone here is ordering.

black would put me right off, so not everyone

That's fine, it's a large world with a variety of tastes....heck some people like Imagine Dragons.

With that said I have yet to see a single person on these forums in years complain about the color of the iMac Pro. Practically all professional monitors are some form of black for practical reasons. Heck vast majority of monitors in general are usually black(again for practical reasons).

This is literally the exact same logic I'm using for my Dad's new iMac. I don't think I'll spring for 16GB though.

“If the Mac you’re waiting for doesn’t get shown tomorrow, I’m expecting another rollout in May-June timeframe. And another in the fall.” - Mark Gurman:
“I think it will be odd for the M2 to be announced alongside an M1-series Mac mini/Mac Studio/Small Mac Pro — so maybe we should look for that as part of the May-June cycle. On the other hand, Apple is testing M2 Macs (8 CPU/10 GPU cores) against App Store apps now.” - Mark Gurman:
”FYI: Still expecting an iMac Pro, for those wondering. M2 versions of the Mac mini, MacBook Pro 13-inch and 24-inch iMac are also in development.” - Mark Gurman:

If it’s for casual stuff or some mid-heavy work just buy the damn thing. Playing the waiting game without a good reason is not good.

If you really need heavy duty machine or more than 16GB RAM wait. Maybe they will be upgraded with M1 Pro or M2.

Now with the new M1s people forget how powerfull M1 really is. Even though is seen as an “entry” CPU is by far not entry. It definitely covers the low and mid range. So the other M1s are made for the professional. I see M1 Ultra made for a nieche category of pros tbh.

I hope there's a refresh, I want to replace my 27 inch with the 24 inch iMac, but really need a 32gb of ram option, I thought about just completely replacing it with a 16 inch MacBook, but I have a 12.9 inch iPad and don't need a "portable" computer.

“Apple is working on a new 24-inch iMac expected to be introduced sometime in 2023, but similar to the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro, it is unlikely to feature Apple’s high-end processors.”

”The information comes from the same sources that revealed to us the plans for Mac Studio and Studio Display in advance.”
