I'll get one once they're available in 7200 rpm. 5400 is too slow for me (multitrack live recordings etc...).

Glad they've finally reached 250 though. I was only planning to upgrade mine once they reached drives this big...

That is awesome! I had no idea they could manage that. Wow, when I upgrade to a MacBook Pro, I'm totally getting one of those monsters. If only Apple would do a BTO option, but I doubt it... oh well, good enough anyway. Yeah, I never really liked those external HDs, so this is good news for me (thought I'd have to go with the 200 GB, 4200 RPM offered... *shudder*)

I still may go for an external HD just for the external backup option :D

There's no way that this MCE MobileStor company manufactures it's own hard drives. It's gotta be a rebranded unit from Seagate, WD, Hitachi, Fujitsu, etc. And it will probably be cheaper than this unit once released OEM.

Aparrently the larger drives (200gb+) spinning at a lower rpm can be faster than the smaller capacity drives spinning faster. This is due a large amount of data being put onto the same area. just thought i'd put that out there...

200 GB 7200 RPM drives are available now (or are claimed to be available now.) And increases in aerial density also increase raw read/write speed, so a newer, higher-capacity 5400 RPM drive *MAY* be faster than an older 7200 RPM drive. (For example, I have an old 18 GB 10,000 RPM SCSI drive that is noticeably slower than a recent 40 GB 7200 RPM SATA drive.)

I would estimate that this 250 GB 5400 RPM drive could probably handle at least equal read/write speeds to the 100 GB 7200 RPM drive I have in my MacBook Pro. (And I know that the 7200 RPM 60 GB hard drive in my PC laptop benchmarks slower than the 160 GB 5400 RPM hard drive in a friend's PC laptop.)

I had never thought of that. That seems so obvious now... but hey, the faster it is, the faster it reads, thus giving it more speed for its size. So speed is really a formula between desity and rotation speed. COOL!

Very True but I like this that they are offering because the do offer the nice external for your old hard drive that comes all bundled with this package. I just wish it wouldn't void your warranty to change out a MBP hard drive... such a dumb dumb thing... (I get why, but apple should offer it for free or dirt cheap then).

How long before Apple include a 250 GB drive as a standard option? They were quite quick to update to the 200GB drive.

The 200GB 2.5inch drives that were available as of Friday of last week (Hitachi, I believe) are unfortunately 12.5mm tall, rather than the industry standard 9mm high. I believe that this means that they will not fit in the standard MacBook/Pro drive bay.
