250gb external drive. Need help

Hello, I am new to these forums and have a question..

I have a G5 and was thinking about getting this

Does anyone have one? what are the pros and cons? Is this a good external drive?

hmm, it *looks* okay, but can't say anything from personal experience. FWIW, lots of people including myself would recommend LaCie for external drives, or even getting your own enclosure/drive to get exactly what you want. LaCie do a triple interface drive that is also FW800-capable - and I wanted a bit of future-proofing.

Those Bytecc enclosures work fine. The WD2500BB is an old model, discontinued. That's not necessarily a problem in itself, but if you're paying for factory new, you'll want to do a bit of extra asking to make sure you are getting new stuff.

Thanks for the information.. The drives i am looking at are used. I might be getting two for $300..

No, not at all.
You're going to be getting minimal warranty, if any. I would pass on this deal.

A good new case with a 1 year warranty is US$60 - 70
A 250 Gb hard drive new with a 5 year warranty and 8 Mb cache is about US$115

So you could make your own for $185 each and have far better warranty protection and a better drive mechanism.

I've mentioned this in another thread. TigerDirect is selling a Seagate 250 GB 7200 RPM 8 MB cache HDD for $69 after rebate. It's on their homepage. Also, a decent enclosure shouldn't cost more than $70 (it'll be a lot less if you only need USB 2.0).

Geeks.com had FW400/USB2 enclosures for $27 ... they sold out (ugly cases anyway).

I'd say that's the retail average ... though that should be the max price not the average when making a purchase. Here's another 250 FW/USB for $169

Check http://www.passwird.com for deals they have quite a few popping up now and then on drives and external drives.

I recently purchased an aComdata external (USB2) 250g for (after rebates) $200 canadian. USB2 drives are fine if you're transferring large archives, but it seems to be almost painfully slow (mind you it's on my PC desktop p4 2.0 512mb ram) for transferring LOTS of small files (around 80 gigs worth) took around 100 minutes (tons of tiny html files, small images, etc..) on the plus side it is one of the sexier looking external drives. http://www.acomdata.com/hdp/fs.html

and on the LaCie, last night i transfered 110 gb in 38 mins
(FW800, see comp. in sig)

I strictly recomend getting an internal Seagate with GShock and then a small multi-interface external housing. The Seagates are the most realiage and they have a 5 YEAR WARRANTY on the internal drives. The already-made external models come with probably a 1 year warranty.

You could probably get a drive with a smaller capacity and a different internal interface if you want to spend less.

I recommend a Seagate Barracuda 500gb sata

and a multi-interface external enclosure
