Placed an order for a 256... but now I’m not to sure if I want to upgrade to 512..
I use iCloud photos and iCloud messages which saves me a lot of space on my phone. I have about 120 gigs free because of these two features. My messaging database is 90 gigs alone. While my photo library is 220 gigs..
I like iCloud photos. It’s definitely improved over the years. But with this new phone shooting 4K. I can’t imaginr how slow it’s going to be trying to watch one of these said videos while over cellular.
I’m not sure if that thought alone is worth me spending the extra $$ or not.

I like iCloud as a backup, but I still prefer to have everything on my phone locally, in full quality. Pictures, messages, music, everything.

The one time I tried iCloud pictures, I couldn’t stand how they were blurry for a sec before they fully downloaded.

I like iCloud but I do not like optimizing photos. I got 512GB. Rather have more memory than less.

I like iCloud as a backup as well.. I feel like I put up with 256 just because I had to. I hate the loading times on my pictures as well. But I will admit, it has gotten much better/faster over the years!

how is your messages database 90GB :eek:

Lol.. I don’t delete any of my messages.. unfortunately I lost some messages prior to 2015 due to a database corruption error. I still have the backup database somewhere. I may try to get it to upload to iCloud :)

Mind you..... now Apple makes it extra difficult to sync your own music or videos to iDevices through iTunes.

Todays experience with my iPhone X 256 GB

I wanted to transfer 30 GB of my own music to my iPhone X for listening on a trip. I dragged the folder containing my music to iTunes and into the left pane where it says Music section under my iPhone. My PC froze for a minute. Then the + appeared and it took good 45 mins to transfer files.... because Apple cheapened out on USB 2 transfer speeds.

After the transfer was done, I opened the music app and iTunes had made each track it’s own album. So if an album has 10 tracks, my iPhone showed 10 albums with same cover containing 1 track each. So after furious Googling on the internet, I found out that I need to add those tracks to iTunes library first abd then drag all those selected albums from iTunes library to my iPhone’s library.

But dragging such huge library crashed iTunes. I got it at 3rd attempt. Then 45 minutes to transfer files again.

This has actually left a bitter taste. This change was done sometime last year.

Regarding movies, you know they have to be in specific mp4 container format with acceptable audio and video codecs. Then again the drill of adding the mp4 file to iTunes library.

So to be honest, I don’t see a reason to go for 256 or 512 gb storage when Apple goes out of their way to prevent/discourage you to transfer your own media and that too at pathetic USB 2 speed. This deserves a new topic in itself.
