256Gb upgrade

Has anyone discovered if it is actually possible to upgrade the internal flash storage to 256Gb as per the (Engadget) Photofast and Toshiba news stories?

yup it is, photofast has a great Sandforce 1200 based replacement, although it has not been released and i emailed photofast and it apparenty it will come with the tool to remove the screws to do the upgrade.

no known release date yet, but i assume it will be soon.


i cant wait to do the upgrade.

If you google the pictures that ifixit took of taking the Air apart, the RAM is soldered in. I'm guessing if you had the skills to unsolder/resolder, it might be, but for the average person, it's not upgradeable.

Are you asking about upgrading the 11" or 13" to 256 GB? I don't think if we know whether or not the 256 GB flash module will fit into the 11" MBA.

only as a CTO at purchase.
doubt in the future Apple will provide upgradable slots for the Air.
little fingers tend to void warranties, esp with 'unauthorised' memory

The 256 GB is slightly thicker than the the 64 and 128 GB flash drives. We don't know if that's a deal breaker or not yet...

The hardest part about this upgrade seems to be getting a hold of a Torx Plus screwdriver with the pentalobular pattern to remove the Air's security screws. It's not the same pattern as the five-pointed Torx screws with the pin in e middle.

No, the hardest part is the fact that no 256GB SSDs for the 11in MBA are available. Press releases are not products, and the fact remains that while it might be possible in the future to upgrade existing MBAs, we don't know for sure.

Filing down a Torx screwdriver might be annoying, but will probably not be too difficult. Perhaps it even suffices to pad a smaller Torx.
