I just read that the iPad has 256mb not 512mb? This is the same amount as the iPhone and iPod touch but the iPad has a much larger screen, what gives? Doesn't this seem like it will limit multitasking?

It's not a problem when there is no multitasking....

Anyway, stop thinking of the specs in relation to a normal computer, that's pointless.

Apple spent 1 billion just developing the processor for the iPad. Do you really think that they would have only put in 256mb of ram if they thought it would hamstring the intended functionality?

It amuses me that as fast as this machine is, people are worried to death over the amount of RAM.

RAM doesn't mean anything really. The apps are designed to run with it. Game consoles don't have much RAM either.

Game consoles don't multitask either, I guess that's a good comparison.

Mac OS X 10.0 could run well on 128MB of RAM and multitask quite well, not to mention the fact that the iPad uses Flash Memory that can do Virtual RAM quite well.

EDIT: Ninja'd.

When I first read the headline (and the story of the single core processor) I was a bit shocked... why wouldn't they have comparable innards to other devices (ie a dual core.. or A9.. whatever it is)... but then I just watched a video of it running apps and am now starting to think who cares about the actual specs if it works really well? Sure it looks bad on a stats sheet but I'm not sure the point of a device like this is to have more muscle than the competitors.. I think it's intended to just work better.

Perhaps it is finally time for people to focus on what a device DOES rather than what it IS (tech specs).

:)

The amount of RAM matters if you plan on jailbreaking to enable multitasking. RAM is pretty much the #1 concern running a lot of the better Cydia apps.

I don't think Apple cares about this one or had it in mind when they designed it. I am so there are reasons Apple decided to only go with this amount of RAM. A lot of the games are stunning for such a device. The battery life is amazing. Let's see a Netbook do that. Haha I had to grow that last part in there.

Netbook do what? They already have longer battery life than iPad.

My jail broken iPhone can multitask just fine with 256mb ram so I'm pretty sure it won't be an issue. My first packard bell had 8mb ram and windows 3.1 multitasked too.

I am not too aware of a Netbook that can outperform the iPad in battery life...I could be wrong...but which one?

Nor can a Netbook play games like the iPad can. I know the two devices really cannot be compared and a Netbook can do other things the iPad can't and vice versa.
