If you play games, i5 will be worth it.

Grafic card is like 1 year old anyway?
Looking to be able to play the new starwars online game.
is it really ? the i5 is "just" a mobile CPU i don't see why this is so much faster in games then a Core 2 Duo
what if you don't play games? we do some semi-serious photography. will use iLife initially but eventually may upgrade to photoshop. Worth the extra $300 for i5, or $500 for i7?
see this link. I think the answer is possibly for the i5 and no for the i7.what if you don't play games? we do some semi-serious photography. will use iLife initially but eventually may upgrade to photoshop. Worth the extra $300 for i5, or $500 for i7?
Yes but it's good card
It's NOT mobile card. It's 95W desktop CPU
It's huge bump for 300$

I'm not a techy so I'm a bit confused about the quad core. Sorry if this is a stupid question but how come the first config of the 27' iMac is 3.06 ghz and the quad core is only 2.66ghz? Bear in mind, I don't know much about quad cores or if the ghz in a computer is the important part. I'm thinking of getting one and I'd love if someone explained it to me (without the snide remarks)? Is quad core a huge leap up? What will it do for the iMac?
Also, another silly question but you see the wallpaper on the iMac on the Apple site of the earth from space? Where can I get that?
Cheers.
This is a great thread. I'm the guy that has the 20 gig 512 mg of ram 7 year old Dell. I was all set to get the bottom of the line 24" iMac but waited till this new iMac came out. I'm looking at getting the base model machine as well, for $1699 - $100 for the educational discount. I can't really easily afford the more expensive quad core machines. Compared to my Dell, the 24" iMac was more than enough for me. I planned to keep it at least 10 years or until it died for good. Am I making a mistake planning to get this base model 27" machine and not spend the extra $300 for the quad core? All I do is surf, watch some videos online but not movies, email, type up word docs, excel spreadsheets now and then, and an occasional powerpoint presentation.
Am I golden just getting the base model 27" iMac? Or ... go for the quad core, I'll be sorry I didn't in a few years?
Also, is the back of the new machine the same cheap plastic that was on the 24"? Or is it... fast beating heart be still... actual aluminum like it looks like it is in the picture on the official Apple site? I noticed that the 27" are about 5 pounds heavier than the 24"ers were. That's kind of significant when you have to bring it in for service. Glad I'm not a little old lady and can lift something that heavy without a problem.
Thanks,
Steve R
If those are the only tasks you do w/ any frequency you will see zero difference between the two machines.
