27" 5K iMac

Just a quick question: do all current models let you upgrade the RAM?

I'm debating right now what to do... I ordered a 13" MBP but I could cancel it and for about the same price I can get the 27" 5K with 2TB fusion (so I get the flash 128gb) and then upgrade the RAM later (from Crucial or so...much cheaper than from Apple).

What do you think?

i5 3,2 Ghz + 8 Gb RAM (upgrade later to 32 or higher..not sure what's the max) + AMD Radeon R9 M380

Mobility isn't that important for me (I can use an iPad for when I travel and so).

The GPU (M380) is garbage, everything else, your good. If possible choose the M390 or 395.

Yes, all current 27" iMacs have user upgradable memory with 4 slots and support up to 64gb (you can't go that high when ordering but I would never buy extra RAM from Apple for a machine that's user upgradable).

I upgraded mine to 32gb using Crucial RAM and not had any issues at all

Thanks! I used Crucial on my current iMac mid-2010 and didn't have any issue either

If mobility is not a need, then I think the 27" iMac provides a superior experience because you get a better CPU, GPU, larger screen that is 5k, and a P3 gamut.

Personally, I found that the sweet spot in line up to be the M395 stock configuration, because I get of 2TB storage (and 128GB of flash), and a very good dGPU. I bought mine M395 based iMac last black friday and being that holiday is mere weeks away, perhaps that might be an option for you.

It won't be a very demanding usage. Mostly some photo/light video editing and text processing, OmegaT and others (translation tool) and some video streaming. I just want to replace my current mid-2010 iMac (core i3 and it's running slow and giving me issues... so now..anything will be better than what I have) and keep the new machine for a few years. I can't upgrade every other year...hence trying to upgrade some components...

Mobility isn't *that* important. I'm currently living abroad but if I managed to transport the iMac I currently have, I can also transport the new one if needed. And for frequent trips, I can use a Windows laptop I still keep (slow as hell..but still works) and the iPad.

If you'll be using it for photo and video editing go for the iMac, especially for the same price of the new MBP, it's a no brainer.
