A friend of mine has an Apple 27" Cinema Display kicking around unused. I'm going to go check it out, and if it's the A1316 model, not the Thunderbolt model, I might buy it off him.

However, I've read there are some difficulties getting these things to work. A1407 is out of the question as it requires Thunderbolt. But the A1316 uses Mini DisplayPort. Can that be adapted to either the standard DisplayPort or HDMI plugs on my RX 580?

Google is remarkably useless at pointing me to answers as it constantly thinks I want MacBook Pro and not just Mac Pro results.

I would suggest to use only displayport protocol with 27" cinema. A good DP to miniDP would work for sure.

While you might find an active adapter to convert HDMI to displayport, they are costly, and not sure if they are as reliable as native displayport would be. Or if they support the full resolution either, don't know.

Thanks guys! Hopefully this does end up actually being an A1316 and not the much-more-common A1407… I’ll be picking it up if it works.

I have one on my 6 cores 2009 and used it to test dual screen on my 12 cores, it worked perfectly on a Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+

Adapters received and it's working perfectly. Brightness keys function as expected. Very seamless experience. The construction is impeccable and it's a beautiful piece of hardware. Looks like the iMac we were all hoping Apple was going to give us last year.

I found the stock colors to be a bit washed out so I switched it to my old monitor's color profile instead (Asus PB278Q). Gives it just a little better contrast.

Still looks kind of washed when in Windows and playing games so I'll have to tweak it there too.

It initially gave off some of the PSU buzzing that apparently these thigns are famous for, but it seems to have stopped. Supposedly this display only had about 5 hours on it before it got stored. It's completely mint. Very pleased.
