I really want to order an i7 with 8gb ram...

however i'm a little aprehensive, its going to be a 3 week wait to get it... then if it does have problems am i right in saying that it will make repairs/replacements more difficult/take longer?

any input/experiences would be very appreciated

you might get lucky.... hopefully the reason for the 3 week delay is because they fixed it. we will find out... I just bought my 27" i5 almost 3 weeks ago, and I think mine might be getting worse (display wise). I really hope they fixed something... i'm getting ready to send mine back

Just please don't order the RAM from Apple...

Ya thats true... it's a total ripoff. if you buy an extra 8 gigs of ram (4x2) from apple, it would be around 800... if you buy from crucial.com, 8 gigs (4x2) would be around 500 bucks.

If there is anything wrong with it when it arrives, you can just send it back for another model, or indeed a refund. This will take no longer than if the machine is stock.

However, I would still wait a while to this whole imac hubub is totally over before ordering - but thats just me, you may get lucky!

Finally, as for buying ram from apple. Many people here will tell you that it is a bad thing to do, but I have done so (bought 8n gigs of it back in 2008, it was VERY expensive) and am pleased that i did. It really depends on what you deem important. For me, I wanted the security of applecare on my ram too, and also was only able to import the ram from the US which would have been a massive hassle!

Others think that it is better to buy from a third party, and they have very good reasons for doing so. Remember also though that sometimes the difference is negligible, and to get the warranty and freedom from the hassle of adding it (even though it is not difficult) may be worth the extar, which in some cases can be as little as £10

Yeah, and don't buy it from Crucial cause it's a rip-off. You can get Samsung sticks on eBay for under $170 after Bing Cashback, or $180 without cashback, so $360 max for 8GB.

PS I love Crucial memory, but I also love a deal. :)

If you follow these threads you are never gonna buy a computer.
I got mine on Feb 1st and I'm still the happiest man alive. The i7 is a monster. It took a long time (1 month) because they are back ordered but the paranoia here must be taken with a grain of salt.
Besides the wait the machines are mostly good. It's actually the first time that I don't find any problems with a personal computer.
After reading about the yellow screen I first noticed a warmer white towards the lower part of the screen but I'm not a professional photographer and just last night at a friends place I noticed that his "non apple" screen has pink, blue and yellow tinges allover the place. That made my monitor look almost too good to be true.

Just go ahead and get it if you need it, the longer you wait, the longer it will take to come.

If you could wait another 3 months get a new revision, it will be probably more bang for the buck as usual.

Also you can upgrade the RAM for half the price if you get a non Apple brand, the install is very easy even my mother could do it (I love you mom).

Last point: stop reading these forums if you are not sure about purchasing a new computer... did I say that twice?

Yes, and no.

You do have to remember that Apple's price does include having them fit the RAM ... although even at the ridiculous prices technicans charge, Apple's price is still too high.

Getting RAM from Crucial, etc. means you have to fit it yourself (not particularly difficult on an iMac, but a bit of a pain on a Mac Mini).

I would be waiting, well indeed I am actually, to get a new imac. I will be selling my macs and replacing them >

17 MBP > 27 iMac i5

15 MBP and MB Air > 13 MBP i5 (hopefully)

this would mean if I had any quality issues I would be without a computer. Therefore, I'm willing to take a slight hit on my residual prices in order to secure a model with no none quality issues

On top of that, you can sell the RAM that came with your iMac. So, in the end, you save even more. That is how I ended up paying around $10 for a 7200 rpm 320 GB HDD on my MB Pro. Sold the original one on Ebay and bought the new one on a website. They even gave me 3 years warranty. It is the same story with the RAM upgrade. It hardly cost me anything. The only annoying bit is that I always get the AppleCare with university lecturers' discount and when I sell the used parts, there is no point in stating that these parts actually carry the extended warranty. I don't want anybody sending them back to me in two years' time.
 
it was only an extra £172 to go from 4gb to 8gb... i mean im not up to date on prices but that doesn't seem too bad?

i'd rather just get it like this and have my applecare cover everything with no arguments if i'm honest.....

just got a pay rise today, so i guess its time to order... a celebration if you will.
