27" IMac 2011 Problem during copy of files to external HDD

Hey folks,

I have a Problem with my new IMac. Yesterday i wanted to transfer some Videofiles (.mkv) from my Mac to my external HDD. During the transfer i wanted to open another videofile on the external HDD in order to watch it. But it would not open. Only after the copying process was finished the file was played in VLC.
Is this normal? Cause on my old 20" from 2007 i did not had this Problem.
