Would really appreciate some help with this...

Following the iMac HDD/SSD blade upgrade post, I successfully upgraded my 2015 27" iMac with a 256GB SSUBX Blade and 1TB Crucial MX500 - no issues.

I meant to renew the NVRAM battery at the same time (BR2032 for a CR2032) but in my excitement/haste to try out the new SSDs, I forgot - doh! As Id deliberately not resealed the display (for testing) I decided to open it up again this week to get to the battery.

Battery replaced I then plugged in the power cord and was surprised to hear the Mac power on - but with a recurring beep every 5 seconds. Looking at the logic board LEDs I see just no. 1 and 2 are lit.

Researching the LEDs suggested either battery or logic board fault but researching the beeping suggested the RAM couldn't be detected, of which there is 4x8GB of Kingston Hyper X.

So, I removed all the RAM first - same beep (as expected), tried all sticks in different slots, no change.
I replaced the new battery for the old BR2032 (having further researched that actually these things can last up to 10 years) - but still no change.

Then I read online a seemingly random/unrelated suggestion to detached the audio headphone flex cable from the logic board (bottom right next to right speaker) - yeah, like this was gonna make a difference....
I nearly fell off my chair when it booted!!!! :) All sticks back in, BR2032 in, all LEDs lit up - only I have lost sound and obviously no headphone socket. So.....

Why would I get the 5 second recurring beep due to a (faulty?) headphone flex cable?

The sound output is greyed out, set to Digital Out and my volume buttons do nothing. I've read there can be issues where the socket gets clogged or tripped into Digital Output only so I tried plugging in a set of headphones several times to no avail.

I tried a NRVAM and SMC reset and Apple Diagnostics reports no issues found. I fired up the MIDI Utility and played around with setting basic settings (online suggestion) but figured, with the headphone disconnected it wouldn't help. Even though its disconnected, surely I should get sound out of my speakers though?

If I plug the flex cable back in, the Mac doesn't boot and beeps, only LED's 1&2 show. Whats going on?!

Would a replacement audio headphone flex cable fix this? I would say yes but not 100% sure. Ive seen one for about £9 but it states for model A1419 2013 only and they've confirmed it won't work with mine - even though its an A1419, only a different year. Think I might order anyway....

Thanks for reading...

That is so weird.. I've never seen that being an issue with this type of machine??

The 2013 is compatible with the 2015 - I wouldn't worry with that, I've successfully swapped these parts around myself.
The headphone port can be a bit annoying to remove from the case - since it is stuck down with adhesive, and will need to be re-applied with something adhesive too.

Does the place you are buying this part from supply any type of adhesive with it? If not -- the usual way I replace this part is with some super glue, with about 80% success of it maintaining being stuck to the case. (I hold it in place with a pair of headphones plugged in, and some tools to push it down towards the case).

Its really, really weird isn't it!
Good to know re headphone part - I shall get on and order one. No mention of adhesive though so I'll be sure to get some. Do you think this would fix the issue though?!

Sadly I can't guarantee if it will work or not personally - since I've never had a 2015 with a fault fixed only by unplugging the headphone port.

You should be able to check yourself when you get the new part- just plug it in and try turning it on, without sticking it to the case yet.

Part ordered - will update. Man I hope it fixes it...

Anyone else have any ideas as to how/why unplugging this flex cable allows the Mac to boot but when connected, reports as if no RAM installed? Makes no sense....

For anyone interested and to @TwoH specifically

New headphone part arrived today (£9 eBay) and.........it works! :) Test fitting went fine so went about removing the internals again, peeled off the pre applied 3M backing tape and it popped right in. Mac boots and sound restored to normal.

I still find it weird this prevented my iMac from booting. Anyone got any ideas why?!

Will seal the display and then its time to sell....

Hope this helps someone in future.
