27" iMac bad experience

so i bought the base 27" model the day after it was announced from my local apple store to notice it had a loud HDD which i got a replacement, the second one developed the same problem after a week of use after getting really annoyed of driving a 2 hour round trip and then walking a qtr of a mile with a heavy box everytime i decided to give up on the base model and get a credit note under the 14 day and wait for the quad....
So last night i finally got my i5 and i was over the moon to finally get it.... hard drive was better some noise but more quiet than the base model ones, all of a sudden i have multiple thick black streaks running from top to bottom and i counted around 30 ish of em...i couldnt believe it i really am gutted, so rang apple care i even sent the picture i took with my iphone and the rep immediately said take it back, "its ok doing that" i said "but this will be the 4th time". He recommended i rang the shop to ask to test another new one in store before i take it so looks like another trek tomorrow
 
I hear ya. I'm replacing my i7 because of the hard drive. (grumble, grumble grumble) I hope my second Imac is fine but I'm committed to just keep replacing the thing until I get one that works the way its supposed to. I just with I hadn't moved all my files and folders on to the new iMac so soon.
 
I assume you bought them all from the same store.

I would suggest that you call applecare back and explain that you it will be 8 hours travel time. And state that this has cost you alot of money in travel and time, and some compensation should be in order. They will have a record of the returns, you will get yourself a free nano , applecare or a discount. They can put a note on the system.

If they do not play ball take it back and ask to see the manager, explain how much of a waste of time it was, if he is good at his job you should at least land free applecare. And make his take it out instore and test it.

I am lucky i work right near an Applestore, but it took me 4 returns to get a proper MBP.
 
This is almost like the time the first imac's came out. most of the hard drive where bad.

I'm just :eek: about all the problems that this imac had since day one.

Is it normal that this kind of machine has so many problems?? i mean, it's increadible the range of problems that i already have read here.

Not enough to stop me from buying one though :D:D
 
They should just give you a free replacement for you're trouble. It saddens me to see the quality issues, but shareholders matter more.
 
im still unhappy about not being able to run windows so i can watch blu-rays without getting video card issues.


doesnt matter which version of windows you try :(
xp, vista and 7 :(

IMAC core i7 = IFAIL!

the imac doesn't have a BR drive
 
still can't understand why do you keep wanting to watch movies in the imac.

and further more it doesn't have blue-ray optical driver.

go the living room and whatch it there.

i'm stunned at the constant whining about the blue ray, for f*** sake, want a machine with blue ray, buy a damn WINFROZE pc, simple as that!

just because the imac doesn't have blue ray, frying pan, cup holder, and a couples of hands to massage you, you go and say that's failure from apple.

I hear you about the hard drive.. mine was dead quiet the first few days (even after a data migration from my old powerbook g4) but now it makes noise all the time, even while surfing the web! Such an elegant beautiful machine to make so much noise... Not sure if you will have much luck with a replacement, there seems to be a lot of posts about the HD... From what I can tell it has to do with having a Seagate drive (model ST31000528ASQ), and it appears the majority of the 1 tb machines have that drive... By the way, I have the 27" i5, but the i7s also have the Seagate drive...

I am going to my apple store today to discuss with them...
 
i have an external LG Blu-ray burner

it will burn blu-rays however it won't play them

FAIL!
 
thank god i still have my iMac G3 :) no noise at all no wining harddrive no roaring fans, just peaceful and quiet and i can get via apple talk all videos streamed right to my bed and it plays them just fine

so why should i spend all that money for a new imac only to get a wining roaring vibrating big screen ,

sorry but if i read here i get the impression the new iMac is the worst quality computer ever produced in history
dead pixels ,lines on screen ,whining fans ,roaring harddrives , vibrating like a washing machine ,kernel panics , software issues
sorry to tell you but the thinner the iMac gets the more compromises you have to make ,
and no i did not lose my mind here , a bit more room and the iMac could be a fanless design , which would solve the fan noise problems
and if apple had opted for a ssd drive (you get them to my knowlege up to 320gb now ) the harddrive noise would be gone to , and as far as i`m aware the software issue is solved by reinstalling and update ,
that would leave the screen issue to deal with

and for the blue ray ey you spend that much money on the iMac now ,so it doesn`t matter if you spend a bit more and buy a dell zino which comes with blue ray player and stream them to your iMac you can hide it in a cupboard or put it under the desk or so if you dont want anybody to see you are using a dell pc

For every post reporting issues there are more than likely 100's or 1000's of iMac purchasers who are totally happy with their purchase. Forums, understandably, generally attract people reporting issues as they try to seek answers and/or confirmation.

SPCDust, you have the iMac that my company is looking to purchase for our Creative Design Department... Do you like it? Are you using programs that see benefits from the i7 & 8GB of RAM? We are working with heavy flash & Maya projects that will/would ultimately be nice to have a machine like the one you have...

I think Cnet or some website found out how to plug in the proper blu-ray driver and use it to watch video on it. they were playing pirates of the Caribbean off of it
 
Boot times

When I press the power button on brand new iMac core i5 the white screen appears after 5-6 seconds, sometimes even around 10. The boot time is normal after then which is about 30-35 seconds making it a total of 45 seconds till the desktop screen.

Is anyone having this issue?

Maybe try a fresh install of SL?

I made the HDD as startup disk. Planning to fresh install SL on my SSD when I upgrade it this weekend. If the problem still exists, I'll post again. But for now, I'm not sure if this is hard drive related. I upgraded to 8GB memory by adding 2x2GB Crucial PC38500 1066 chips. Not sure if it did the same before the memory upgrade. Will have to remove the Crucial chips to check it out though.
