I have not yet bought the new Imac. I am fairly new to macs having used a PC my entire life. But i look forward to the change and hope it's good. My major concern only now is that i was wondering if there's anyway to hook my PS3 to this new imac since the displays are phenomenal and it lacks a blu-ray player. The 21.5" has no DVI input while the 27" does, so i'm guessing i'll have to get the 27" if i want my PS3 to connect in anyway? If there is no perfect way to get 1080p then please let me know and i will stick to the 21.5" since the PS3 connecting to the 27" was the only reason i was buying the larger model. Thank you,

27" Imac compatiable with PS3?

You will be able to connect a device (360, PS3, Blu-ray) eventually in the near future. The 27" has the input to do this, but you won't be able to use it for a monitor yet. Apple is suppose to be making a converter by the end of the year, so we'll have to wait and see. A few people on this forum have tried connecting either their 360 or PS3 and they have had no luck. You should still get the 27" and be patient when the adapter is released. I plan on doing this as well.
there is no dvi input, the only input is mini-display port.
what is needed is a HDMI - mini-displayport active coverter but the only available ones (google atlona) do not work because the 1080p signal from the PS3 also has to be upscaled to the iMac's resolution. These converters are already ~150 - $200.
Apple has said they will not be making a converter, Belkin had a page about one but has since removed it, so its not clear if they will either, and so its probably not going to be possible for a long time.
Even if/when an adapter comes out the picture will be up-scaled so the picture will not be perfect. If your only reason for the 27" is for blu-ray playback and PS3 gaming then I would save the $500.
You can get 32" 1080P HD TV's for under $500. Currently Best Buy has a 40" 1080P TV for $550. Either of these could also double as a giant screen for the iMac. Which could make you consider a Mini instead.
Heck you could go with a Mini. Deck it out and hook both it and the PS3 to a big 1080P HDTV.

Thank you, i will stick to the 21.5" since currently my PS3 isn't possible to connect without spending over $200!! Is there any other way of watching blu-ray movies on the new Imacs? 21.5" AND 27"?
Question: Is there a sexy external Blu-Ray drive on the market that connects directly to the iMac.. like with mini-displayport or usb or firewire or whatever?

I really hope there is a solution to hooking up a ps3 to the 27" imac... that is probably the biggest deciding factor for me considering a Mac product and if it turns out that it wont work, or will cost several hundred dollars, then i guess i will just have to build another PC.
To me, restricting the iMac from displaying an input from a PS3 or 360, or any other HD device is just ridiculous, same goes for not having a blu-ray drive.

Install windows on a mac? Will i need to do this in order to watch HD blu-ray movies on the mac? Around how much will the Blu-ray drive external or internal cost for this purpose? I just find it ridiculous that with such a superb display they didn't give an HDMI input or a Blu-ray drive, very disappointing on Apple's part.

All I have seen are plain or ugly. Amazon has a bit better selection seem to be all through third party resellers so I prefer not to link directly.

Yes to simply watch blu rays you will need to install Windows. I am not sure if it will work through Parallels (HDCP Protection) or if you will need to boot directly to Windows.
Now though there is currently no way to play Blu Ray's from reading Cave Man's: Native Blu-ray ripping for OS X thread. You can rip and convert the Blu Ray discs to your Hard Drive then play the converted content. But this requires a really expensive blu ray burner.
Note: I do not know if Apple's hardware is HDCP compliant. If not you will also have to install Slysoft AnyDVD HD to undo that requirement. Which should make it work under Parallels, though with know GPU acceleration handling HD playback. I have read that Slysoft is working on AnyDVD HD for Mac OS X but their timeline is that it will be done when it is done.
Like I said before. The best option for a nice big screen and connecting the PS3 is to get a Mac Mini + HDTV. Unless you need a quad core, which it does not sound like as you were considering the 21" iMac. For less then the high end iMac you could have a Mini with the 2.66Ghz CPU, 500GB internal hard drive, 4GB RAM, HDMI adapter, large external hard drive and a 32" to 40" 1080P HDTV.
Thanks a lot velocityg4, i might just consider getting a PC now since the mac mini internal hard drive is too little i require at least 1TB. I really needed a new computer and the mouse and superb monitor had me convinced to make the switch. Big let down from apple with no blu-ray support or inputs
