So, I just graduated, I'm totally in the moment enjoying it. We went out to eat, and there was a huge box in the distance from the table. I'd been dreaming of getting the 27" iMac for awhile, so I had super awesome X ray vision and knew what it was.... er. I know how big the box is hah. :p

Anyway, we're eating and we finish, I am then offered to open/ unwrap the box, and yea, I tore it open :)

27" screen, 3.06Ghz C2D, 4GB Ram, 1TB Hard Drive. WOOOOOOOOW!!!! This is quiet the upgrade form my 2 year old 2.2Ghz Macbook :)

Super excited to get it! Beautiful, but we're in a steak house, so I can't you know.. use it?

Anyway, we get home, and I set it up and pulled all the plastics off and I have a small crack in the bottom left of the glass. Ok, so it's kinda smashed actually, on the edge. Same as everyone else's cracked iMac.

I know this is a well documented issue, but here's where MY question is.

I think my parents bought it awhile ago. The serial says it was built in December, and Applecare shows it was purchased in like early April.

Will there be any problem taking this to the Apple Store to get it repaired/ replaced? Will they just replace it, or repair it? Will they even try to blame me? Will the fact that it was purchased more than a month ago present a problem?

Thank you all! And happy Graduation Class of 2010! :D

So sorry to hear this. I have the same iMac and it is great. Anyway, I would simply call Apple on Monday morning and tell them you just received this as a gift, opened the box for the first time a few days earlier and state that you want a replacement. I would not get into when it may have been purchased, just when the box was opened. I suspect they will work with you.

I went up to Bestbuy yesterday and talked to the guy in the Apple area. He told me he'd not heard of such and issue and never seen them come cracked, I smell bull crap. You agree?

Anyway, he took the glass off one(21.5", suction cup free) in front of me and told me that's all I would have to do to replace it, implying I'd need to do it/ pay for this. I asked if Apple would replace it at the Apple store, he said no, they'd just repair it. I think that's bull.

I'd rather just take it to the Apple store in order to avoid the loooong shipping wait, also the possibility of ending up in an "infinite loop" due to the horrid craftsmanship with these 27"er's.

Anyone think I can just get it replaced? I can't even take it to the Apple Store till Friday anyway :( just want to be prepared. Any tips?

Is anyone getting flawless 27" iMacs?

Also, for the record, my store is the Biltmore store.

I'd just take it to the Apple store, and explain the situation to them. They can replace the front glass in less than 5 seconds, as the Best Buy rep showed you.

Get this documented with Applecare now, as there could still be a lingering problem that you are unaware of currently.

Before I bought my 27" iMac I talked to the Apple specialist at Best Buy (guy with black shirt and Apple logo) about some of the early problems, his response was, "I read the same things you do but never saw/heard of a problem here.

What you need to do is call Apple directly. do not just show up at the store as you need an appointment. Get this documented ASAP on the phone. There is no reason this 'new' computer should not be taken care of. I think the clock on the warranty may start the day you first use/register it. This is a heart breaking story and you make sure you tell it as such. My 27" is flawless but I did have some trouble with the mouse door popping open all the time after I replaced my first battery. I called Apple and they made an appointment and gave me a new replacement - after the 'genius' said it might be the way I am putting it together so he showed me and had the same problem - my point is expect a little resistance but stand firm.

As a side note, when I graduated college in 76 I went to dinner with my family and my gift was only $100 (I got $200 when I received my masters degree). Of course there was no such thing as a home computer back then and my computer experience involved using punch cards :(

Good luck and stand firm!!!
