Basically I want to connect my Win7 PC tower to my 27" iMac. After doing some research, is it true that only the ATI 4890 and ATI 5970 are the only video cards that have worked in the past? The newer 5870 Eyefinity 6 just got released and seems to be a bit cheaper than the 5970, seems to be untested still. Has anyone got this to work with the cheaper ATI cards with displayport? I don't want to spend more than $600 for this new venture. Any advice?

If it conforms to the mini display port specs, it should work in theory. I am assuming you want to use the 27" display as a secondary or primary display. If so, you will need to have the iMac turned on, and in target display mode as well as a male to male mini display port cable.

Otherwise you will need an adaptor & male to male mini display port cable - http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/DVI-to-Mini-Displayport-Adapter.html - and again the iMac will need to be turned on and in target display mode.

I'm in the same exact situation. I really want a PC on the side rather than bootcamp and the fact I either have to run a $600 plus video card or a old as hell 4890 sucks. The 5870 looks appealing but I would rather spend the extra $100 at that point to get the extra horsepower since that 2560x1440 resolution will need it. When you come down to it... the 5970 is really the only card that can handle that resolution (to some extent). nVidia needs a displayport Fermi card!

So is it possible to use the 27"imac as a monitor for your PC? i have a PC VIsta 64 and a Nvidia GTX 8800 768M card is a tower id like to use on the Imac. any help would be appreciated!

You cant do it with any current nVidia cards. Only ATi cards work at the moment.

Right now it looks like the following cards work. Keep in mind they should have a displayport on them.

Radeon 5800s and 5700s do not work
Radeon 5900s do
Radeon 4000 series cards also work

i called the apple store and they told me that the new Imac 27" will work as a external monitor for ANY PC with DVI...so this is false information??
