Actually IMHO this topic fits here much more, than in a very generic "News and Article Discussion". I'd suggest not to close this one.

Tom B.

Yep I agree, especially for those that don't frequent other areas of the forum.

If Your Screen Is Flickering Do Not Install.

(reposted here)

I didn't have flickering before this update, now after it, I've noticed my screen flutters slightly when the brightness is all the way down. Frack. Nice one Apple.

That is not good to hear... Having never had a single flicker in the 4 weeks of heavy usage with my i7 I'm understandably nervous about applying this firmware. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

I'm going to wait a bit on this one.

I didn't mind being a guinea-pig on this one, since my replacement is on its way for other issues. :)

Same here, my i7 has been flicker-free and flawless for 17 days now so I see no need to download this.

This is mostly good news. However, before we celebrate, let's make sure it actually fixes the issue. We've seen "fixes" that don't actually fix anything before. So, hold the champagne for now.

What is undeniably good however, is that this means Apple officially recognizes the issue. That's very, very good - because it means fewer hassles with returns and repairs ("we never heard of this problem"), and also that hopefully Apple will keep working on a solution, should this one not cut the mustard.

So, slow progress. Now, if only Apple recognized and fixed the "yellow screen" issue. One thing at a time, I guess.

I can't make sense of this but I didn't have flickering and decided to install the update since my replacement for the yellow tinge is on its way to me. No harm either way. Well after having my computer on for an hour the yellow tinge is no longer here with the new update. It was present right before I installed the update. This might just be placebo effect, but I will continue running the computer for the next few hours and see if I can get the yellow tinge back. I will let you guys know.

Also, I have not had any issues with the screen flickering with the new update. No issues in that regard. knewsom might have had a bad download/install?

Yellow tinge is still here for me after updating( even though mine never flickered). The yellow tinge is most likely a defective panel. Apple knows about this as well. So I am holding off until reports of fixed panels start to come in. I have 3 years to do it with AppleCare. :p

Yellow tinge could be either slightly 'warmer' LED lights at the bottom of the display, or as said, defective panels. Either way, a firmware fix is very unlikely to fix those (unless Apple have somehow got a firmware that controls the colour balance/temperature of the LED backlights).

I had the flicker issue for a few days after I got my 27" with 4850 graphics card, but after a reinstall from scratch of the OS it dissappeared, so I'm a little reluctant to apply the firmware - will definitely be monitoring this thread to see how others go.

Thanks for the Heads Up!

This might just be placebo effect,

I'm of the opinion that the yellow tinge is nonsense.

I propose an experiment for all on this forum:

From 30cm (1 foot) lower your head so that you're looking at the Apple logo horizontally at the bottom of your imac.

Look up to the top of the display.

OH MY GOD. THE TOP IS GREYER!

Unless you sit 4 or 5 feet back from the display, you'll see this kind of thing.

It's a big LCD panel.

The characteristics change when viewed from different angles.

Try this on your LCD TV or s**t Dell.

Well guys, I posted this in the other thread but after having the computer on for a bit over 5hrs I noticed the yellow tinge is back again. So as we thought this firmware did not correct the yellow color. Was just a placebo effect for me. Too bad.

I understand how viewing angle affects color balance. This is not that. I can sit back a hundred feet from my display and see the problem.

PS: fluttering has stopped for now.

You obviously haven't been following the threads closely enough have you? Because if you did, you'll see that week 41 iMacs sitting side by side with an affected iMac makes the yellowing to appear striking and obvious.

Many of us have Apple displays sitting side by side with the new iMacs and can see the problem only on the iMacs. It is a serious problem.

You should go read the "Test" thread, at least read the first post.

UPDATE:

my 1 day old i7 had the flickering /black outs right out of the box yesterday.

I have applied the new firmware today and thought, great they fixed it....BUT 2 hrs later here we go again...while not as frequent or severe as yesterday (where the screen would blank out) the screen has flickered about half a dozen times in the last 2 hrs.

So most definitely the firmware update has NOT resolved this issue completely.

What a disappointment...this is my 2nd i7 (first also flickered) and I'm now looking at sending this back as well..

My telly has great colour balance its a pioneer "plasma" though..

My 27" iMac has the yellowing and it can be seen more from further back BUT thats only when on a light screen such as a safari window full screen or any other white window. movies / colour pics are fine and its not really noticeable.. But I paid allot of cash 4 this and even if it was cheeper id want it to do exactly what is says on the tin because thats probably the reason I bought it..
