I have a current gen 27 inch imac with a 2tb HD.

Now I have read various posts that the imac should be loud but I want to ask this user community for some facts/advice.

This computer is constantly making noises, and sounds like computers 10 years used to sound. It isnt loud but it sounds like a constant processing noise. I have turned time machine off.

Also when I am on safari, i will get random pinwheels and all of a sudden my externals and internal hard drive will speed up for a few seconds. I dont know if this is an issue with safari or other browsers in general. The quirks are more annoying than anything. The fact is i spent almost 3k on a computer and expected it to be a super machine. It is an I7 model with 8GB of ram. I plan to try to do a complete OS restore, i have repaired permissions and tried other things to no avail. If i would have known this would happen I would have opted for the 500gb SSD, I am debating whether to call apple or not but i really do not feel like dealing with repairs and having some tech open my machine whether it be in the store or at my home( as i have applecare)

Look forward to hearing some responses.

Most physical harddrive sound like crap now-a-days

You didnt provide much info. If your PC is less then 1yr take it in, if its 3yrs then you need a new HDD

I have the same exact iMac configuration that you have and the system is very quite. The only time that I notice any sound is when the fan kicks in and even then its still very low noise. If your iMac sounds unusual to you or is not what you expected then by all means I would take it in for a look. What you are describing does not seem normal. The beach ball wheel is concerning too. Sounds like your HD may be going south.

I have had a similar issue with 27" iMacs with noisy hard drives and I have gone through three before I got one I was happy with. With my first unit I could hear the hard drive seeking and accessing in a quiet room from five feet away, which was certainly noisier than the late 2006 20" iMac it replaced.

Apple replaced the first one without question; unfortunately the second iMac had the same problem. When I returned the second iMac Apple tested it (in a quiet environment so they said) and proclaimed all to be normal(!) I remained unhappy and so, with some reluctance, they offered a second replacement. This one is much quieter. Interestingly the third iMac was manufactured on a different week to the first and second units.

If you have a noisy iMac it may be worth getting it replaced.
