new 27" iMac 2.93 10.6.4 out of the box. didnt update it as I was presuming it was already uptodate so I had already installed Handbrake/VLC 64bit latest versions.
DVDs play fine and instantly in the DVD Player App, however when opening a DVD Disc from the SuperDrive in VLC it takes forever for it to even load it up, just the loading bar.
Same with handbrake, I went to scan the source straight form the SuperDrive and have been watching it sit for over 30minutes it wasnt even scanning it just said scanning source but no progress bar or anything.

However in my MBP 15" the discs play instantly in dvd, vlc and scan immediately in Handbrake.

any reason why this would be?

sounds like a bad drive. Time to call up apple.

And 10.6.4 isn't the latest so you do need to update....

thats what came out of the box. yeah i got the mac a few days ago so ill definitely ring them up.

after awhile i got handbrake to start encoding the dvd, but it takes forever for it show all the titles and to show up in vlc.
only takes a couple of minutes for the encodes to finish, so im not sure if the drive is bad or what could be the factor.

Did you try an older version of VLC? Handbrake directly relies on vlc's codec library for interacting with dvds, and it isn't a true dvd ripper. You might try something like mactheripper for something like that.

Just cause it's in the box doesn't mean it's the latest. Maybe the latest as to when they packaged it. But updates come out all the time so you should regularly check for them.
I'm actually surprised it didn't pop up telling you to update.

Yeah i tried various options; older VLC, older vlc + older handbrake.

The same config on my MBP works just fine no problems.

I tried some MTR ripped DVDs i had on another drive with the iMac & Handbrake and worked just fine that way....but do not need the MTR copy of these DVDs so id rather just do the straight encode from the DVD to an m4v, the same way Im doing with the MBP.

The dvd player seems to be fine, its just the way its interacting with these two software titles right now is a bit weird.
As like I mentioned before i insert the DVD in, DVD Player APP is instantaneous and plays it just fine.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the region code, i launched handbrake to encode the dvd without select a dvd region code so im not sure if that might have messed up anything, i have since updated the dvd drive with region 1.

didnt have any of these issues with my newer MBP.

I'll run all of the updates again to see if anything might resolve it.

ran all the updates, nothing has changed. didnt think it would.

it just baffles me it works fine with installing software, burning music cds and playing DVDs but vlc/handbrake are the two troublesome apps.
