I have noticed a few times now that when my iMac has gone into sleep
after being left alone (usually for a couple of days) that it is impossible
to wake it up with either the wireless keyboard or (magic) mouse because
both have disconnected from the bluetooth and refuse to reconnect.
Has anyone else seen this ?

The only solution seems to be to connect a usb mouse, turn off
bluetooth and turn it back on and then the keyboard and mouse re-appear.
Its really quite irritating!

In Energy Saver settings in System Preferences if you put a check next to "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" then a simple, single press of the power button on your iMac will wake it up (and put it to sleep if it's already awake).

If you have the Apple Remote a simple press of the play button on it will do the same and holding down the play button on the remote will sleep the Mac.

I ordered the full-size wired Apple keyboard with my i7 so I don't have the keyboard problem obviously but I have found that Better Touch Tool sometimes causes problems with my Magic Mouse on wake from sleep. Specifically the mouse acts as if the left button is pressed down constantly. After I go into BTT preferences and restart BTT it works fine.

So to reset the SMC I just power the machine down, unplug the power cord for 15 seconds
or so and then restart it ?

Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

You missed the 3rd step regarding the power button. I looked back through the document and couldn't find a "15" second figure, so maybe that was just a typo on your part.

Read back through the section for the iMac and give it a go. Hopefully, it'll do the trick for your BT keyboard & mouse.

OK, thanks for clearing that up. I'll give it ago tonight and see how it goes.
