Hi there, hopefully will be able to get some info on here as to what's up with my iMac. Over the last day or so I noticed my screen looking dirty, and have just left it. I went to clean it today and noticed that the "dirt" is under the glass, and on the lcd itself. The only way I can describe it is if you were to burn a candle with a bit of glass behind it, the glass would get like a grey/black residue on it, that's what it looks like. But, the problem is, it isn't uniform, it is in blotches, and it actually looks kinda like fingerprints. Like if you were to put your finger on the glass of the candle, it would take away the residue and leave an oval clean spot? That is just at the top left of the LCD, at the top right, it looks more like dirty water marks on the LCD it's self, again, the same colour.

It is only in the top half of the LCD I am noticing this problem. I wouldn't say it is yellowing, but is this a common problem with iMac LCDs?

I'm currently looking for the charger for my camera, but I'm not even sure if that will show it. My iMac is only 2 months old, if that, and I'm worried as to what might be the cause. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this?

Thanks

Greetings,

It does seem to be a significant issue. There's another thread made recently about it (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1056817/), you'll have to send it in for servicing sadly. I don't recall there being an Apple Store in Glasgow so if you do send it for repairs make sure they actually agree to fix it - this seems like an issue where the technicians might just blame you and send the iMac back without fixing.

So when you call them, make it 100% clear that others have had the same issue.

Thanks for that link. There is an Apple store in Glasgow, although from my and friends of mines previous experience with the "genius" bar is they are very unhelpful, and will do almost anything to avoid repairing a problem. I guess I will take it in and see what they say, I will also show them the pics from that thread you posted as evidence that it is not just me. I am a non smoker, and I don't burn candles so I would hope they don't try and play that card!

Thanks again.

Well I have to say in the 7 years of owning Apple products (including two macs) the in-store service has always been far better for me. Sadly there is a chance you will get the cruel genius who will blame you, but I would simply ask to talk to the manager. Key thing is to be really polite, don't demand or blame them (not that you would), but be polite, calm and mature - and honest.

And yes, even mentioning that there are topics on discussion boards about the same issue may help if the genius isn't buying it.

Good luck

I suspect it's an apple uk thing, not an apple thing overall.

Apple uk are a law unto themselves

I should have said, I live in London. With my white macbook (had the yellow palmrest issue) the genius was pretty rude and happy to blame me for it. As much as his rudeness annoyed me (especially as I was polite to him) the manager was alot more helpful and got it resolved!

Does anyone smoke where you live, even if not in the same room?

My mum smokes downstairs in the home, absolutely nowhere near the iMac. If the smoke was to blame for this, surely it would affect every other device I have had in the past? and in the distance from the living room to my bedroom, surely it dissipates into the surrounding air?
