So i got my 27 inch core i7 imac and constantly heard a whistle kind of noise, i brushed it off and thought i was insane. My friend came over today and sat at my computer and said what the hell is that buzzing? So we turned off my imac and it stopped. I turned it back on and it didn't do it, then when i put my brightness upp the way up i heard the whistle!. i looked it up online and it seems like a pretty common issue... i have a 2.8 i7 model from last year. For paying 2400 for a computer this doesn't seem okay to me. What should i do?

Record it in Garageband and make a song?

bring it to apple , you should have warranty on it ,if you are not covered by either the warranty and didnt buy apple care ... then you should follow MacVibe's instructions and hope you get a number 1 hit so you can afford to get it repaired

little mistake (altered the post)so pack it in the box and go to the nearest apple store tomorrow and show it to a genius

I dont have the time or patience to carry a mammoth 27 inch computer into a public store and sit there while someone who probably knows less about computers than I do tinker with it just to tell me it needs to have the LCD replaced. I didn't spend 2500 for the computer and applecare to waste more of my time. Will apple send me a computer?

You are certainly not going crazy, but this is not happening, you know that, right? Do you remember when I told you yesterday that you'd have this vision?

You known so much about computers, but you can't fix your own problem.

You won't take it in to get the problem fixed, because apparently you know more then the guy that'll take care of the problem for you...

You sure know a lot, but I find it funny that you have to go to a forum to ask for advice over a simple problem with a simple solution.

This will take about an entire hour out of your life, just get it over with.

How about this.

1) Stop being dumb.
2) Set up an appointment at your local apple store.
3) Tell them you have applecare and want it fixed.
4) Continue not being dumb.

So you're lazy.

into a public store
So you're enochlophobic.

and sit there while someone who probably knows less about computers than I do
Yet here you are, asking for help. Oh, and they do know more than you.

I didn't spend 2500 for the computer and applecare to waste more of my time. Will apple send me a computer?
This is my favorite. Applecare is whats going to solve your problem yet you're too lazy to bring the computer to the store. Thats like having a strange engine noise and refusing to go to the mechanic then demanding the manufacturer send you new car. I wish Apple could remove products from people too dumb to own them.

How old is your computer?

I actually understand your frustration. I wouldn't want to have to take it in either, and I live 1+ hour from store.

Good luck!

Since you got applecare, can't you phone the applecare phoneline and explain to them the problem. If there is then they will pick it up from your home for repair.

Bite the bullet and take it in.

I can't tell you the number of times people have not wanted to drive out to my store only to show up days outside of warranty since they "never got around to it."

It's a b*tch to drive a ways and deal with the crowds, but take it in at the first sign of issue. That's what AppleCare is for!

Exactly. This is a little known fact about AppleCare for the iMac and the Mac Pro. You are given the right to a "house call" for purchasing one of these machines due to the fact that they are not easy to move around. Be very firm with the rep on the phone and constantly request someone be dispatched to you. They have to do it.

Obviously you just joined yeterday so let me enligthen you on some facts.

1. Some people have better things to do then sit in a store waiting for people to diagnose a problem which has clearly been identified in a multitude of online threads, including apples official forums.
2.I am asking for help based on other people that have been in my situation and have had a similar prior experience.
3.They know more than I do about how to diagnose issues on a mac because they boot a diagnostic which tells them what is wrong, software does not always identify issues. (If you had a brain you would know that)
4.Have you ever owned a high end item? When you spend lots of money on something, you shouldnt have to spend more time getting it repaired specially when it isnt a year old. So kindly go back to your usual forum (and insignificant life) and learn more before accusing me of being too dumb to own products. (Big words mean nothing). Have a nice day.

Thanks for the good information guys

Aww, did I make you angry? Sorry if the truth hurts. You're whole argument is based on owning a 'high-end' product that you feel should impervious to malfunction. That is retarded. If you had half a brain you'd realize in reality, this is not the case.

Oh, and those technicians that you claim you're smarter than; are you Apple technician certified? You're not. They are. Despite what you may think (I know, thinking is hard), they will have a deeper knowledge of apple products.

Here's a solution: IF you happen to live 50+ miles away from the nearest Apple Store call up AppleCare and explain your oh-so-dire situation. They will send you a box to ship the iMac back for repair. Then you can continue being lazy living in your dream world where everything magically works and Steve Jobs s h*t you out a new iMac every time you hear a funny noise.

I think I may know what you're talking about but maybe not. If so, a lot of people have had similar issues with their iMacs on diff threads/the Apple discussions forum.

It's an issue associated with dimming the backlight on the screen and it comes from the rear of the screen (around the top right if I recall correctly > if you're facing the rear of the computer). Basically what would happen is that if the screen dims past a certain point or the display goes to sleep completely the sound would start. You say that it would start when your brightness is at the highest setting though so I'm not sure. When I first got my iMac is bugged the **** out of me (mainly because the way my computer was set up in the room I would be behind the computer a lot of the time) but never when I was working on the computer (because I would be in front of the computer and brightness would be maxed anyway). I had no car so didn't want to bother lugging it to the Genius Bar so I called Apple about it and spoke to someone who had no idea what was going on and wrote it off as "probably just normal behavior, computers make noises". So I just stopped bothering. At this point, I've either gotten used to it or it's gone away. I also moved and the way the iMac is in my room now the screen is always facing me so I'm never behind and maybe that's why I don't hear it anymore. I don't know but I don't want to try and see if I can hear it again because that would just bother me. I certainly understand your frustration though, it was really annoying but lugging it all the way to the Apple store to risk them telling me it's normal or to get a replacement that makes the same sound would have just been more frustrating so I dealt with it (in the end, it wasn't really THAT big of a deal).
