27-inch iMac with Quad-core: 2.8GHz

A quick computer question, as I'm not too bright when it comes to 'internal workings'.

I'm buying the above iMac to use for main home computer, photos, videos, films, kids games, music, etc. I was going to get the intel i5 version, but was concerned that with 1TB, due to videos of kids, applications, etc, I may run out of space.

The questions are:

1 Will it be enough?

2 If I go for the 2TB hard drive, should I get more power? i.e the intel i7 version?

Any help would be fantastic.

1. 1TB is equivalent to more than 200 pcs of conventional DVDs, are you sure you'll be using that much storage?

2. You don't really need extra power unless you're working with higher-end industry-standard softwares, but if you can afford it, why not?
 
Hey there!

The CPU's power doesn't have any influence on hard drive space. I sense that the i5 (which is plenty fast) will be everything you want. The performance gain in video editing might be latent, or even unnoticeable for you.

I'm using my 27" iMac i5quad for professional Photoshop lifting, Aperture 3, programming and gaming and it's really all I need.

Go for the i5 2.8quad iMac 27" and you won't regret it.

After the event if I do run out of space on the hard drive - is it easy to make it bigger or would I have to use an external drive, like a book?
 
As the iMac has another hard drive bay hidden in it's magnificent enclosure, you can happily add another big hard drive or a SSD drive later on. Just use the service of on of the many Apple Premium Partners to get the job done.

But: 1 TB should be pretty vast for your needs.

You can always buy a big external. They are a lot cheaper than Apple's offerings and will be more than sufficient as storage. Even i3 would be just fine for you

Hi, my new fave external is the Western Digital 4tb quad interface drive, which is actually two 2tb drives in one enclosure. Dead quiet, and a great price... Around $380 on Amazon. Cheers, michael
 
You could always get a 2TB time capsule. It works great with time machine and it would keep all your stuff backed up...just in case.
