Been staring at this screen for two weeks now and it's funny how it now seems so natural. It's maddening how quickly we adapt to screen sizes.

I remember the days when a 17" monitor was considered a luxury and 21" was a dream. Where will it end though? At what point does a screen simply become too big to be practical?

There has to be a practical limit for most people before it becomes simply uncomfortable to sit in front of a dedicated computer screen. And I can't imagine everyone is going to want a computer/TV solution where you have to sit on a couch to use it.

50" is pretty much the max now.
no one really wants to make anything bigger or they won't receive a bluestar label.
Or they would have to make a screen or a TV that's as efficient as a 50"

so, I think that'll be the max for a little while.

lol i know when i put 2 19 in widescreens on my windows machine i was like wow. now that i have a mac even thou its the mini i have it hooked up to my 42 in hdtv and i am like holly crap this is huge. so in a nut shell i have a imac just not the imac as my tv is on a pedstal stand entertainment center and the mini is below it

Personally, I find that sitting right in front of a 30" screen (like the 30" Cinema Display) is too much for me. I get a headache after an hour or so...

I don't mind it at TV viewing distances, but not desktop computer distance.

So for me, the 27" widescreen might actually be akin to the 30" Cinema Display in that it's gonna give me a headache... but if I had the moolah to buy one, I guess I'll have to stock up on paracetamol...

That's the fanboi in me talking...

You need iMac detox! Hop on a family members smaller screen for a little while, and you'll be crying to get back on your iMac.

after a few days or weeks the size becomes normal i guess.

Wow I really wanted to throw into this one but well, it's the holidays so I'll hold off. :D I can't imagine myself personally ever wanting or truly feeling a need for a computer screen larger than 30 inches.

I care more about resolution than the size really, so if +60" has a decent resolution, I would buy it if I had space for it. Okay, for 60" iMac you would need a dedicated wall for it but why not, TV and Mac all-in-one.

I think the limit is less somewhere around 40" because there is simply no space for bigger ones. What I hope is that current display sizes like 20" and 24" get better resolutions so they could display more data but not fill the whole house

What screen size are you talking about?

Computer screen or TV?

TV screens can't be big enough, but it depends on the room you use it in. A 100" TV doesn't make any sense in a 10qm room.

I don't see computer screens to go significantly bigger than 30 inches. Personally I would like to have a new Cinema in the range of 32, maybe 34" inches 16/10 or 16/9.

40" screens as a computer screen are definitely too large. Moving your head horizontally is not a problem, but the height of such a screen get's annoying. You really don't want to tilt your head that much.

I think that 38" is probably the highest a computer monitor's screen size should get. Beyond that, it requires too much head turning (probably lots of desk space for your mouse, too). However, I would like to see higher resolutions and higher pixel density.

This post makes me chuckle... :D

I'm still on a 15" LCD. Wen I have a few more pennies I'm aiming for a 22"ish. but its low on the priorities right now...

Still it works! ;) and OSX properly recognised it... unlike "other well known brands of OS"

I think, for a computer monitor, we reached it at 24".

If this size trend continues, there's going to be a generation of kids who all look like this after a while:

It's the CCFL backlight giving you a headache. I have had the same problem with my 30" Dell. LED backlight is the main reason I bought the new 27" iMac.

Personally, I probably wouldn't want anything much bigger than the old 23" Cinema Display. Right now I have a 20" Cinema as my desktop's primary display and a 1280x1024 Samsung as my secondary, and I love it.

I guess this is an advantage of staying a bit behind the curve - I just upgraded my main laptop from a 12" PowerBook (12" @ 1024x768) to a MacBook Air (13.3" @ 1280x800), and the screen seems like it goes on for miles :p

I'm looking forward to it. I'm coming from the 15.4" MacBook Pro, so as far as pixel density goes, the MBP is 110ppi vs. the 27" iMac at 109ppi, so insignificantly lower. The iMac will be positioned in the same spot on my desk as the MBP.

It's all good. :D

And to the OP... that's how it is for everything better and new. Even watching Blu-ray movies on my 46" 1080p HDTV in 7.1 surround is slightly underwhelming these days. (just slightly)

I felt the same way with my 24" after a week or so. Then just today I put my 17" iMac next to it and the 24" feels humongous again.

It's all about pixel density. Personally, although I wouldn't need it -- I could see having two 27" screens on my desk and having that work pretty well. I'm going to be doing a 27" next to a 23.5" monitor.

My fiance is building a contraption for his office that I'm just calling the monitor arm.

4 24" LCDs, two 20" LCDs, and maybe one other 22".

It's going to be incredibly useless but his schematics (yeah, I said schematics, he's doing this thing where he's mounting the VESA mounts onto 3" metal pipes, I can't explain it -- I'll post picture when he gets done) look cool.

I know some graphic designers who have 2 30" ACDs on their desks at one time.

For me though, I get more benefit out of two separate monitors than just one big one. That's why I want my replacement 27" to come in so quickly. My 27" screen is big enough for everything but I like being able to separate stuff out and I want to use the full 27" for some Illustrator work without having to worry about other program windows pulling me away if I need to check something else.

Large Monitors = Good

I don't know. When working on large engineering drawings (which are very large), I could see a 50" monitor being useful if it had a high resolution. It's also useful for programming, where you might want to see multiple programs and file folders at the same time.

It's sort of like having a large desk vs. small desk: With a small desk, you sometimes need to spend time shuffling papers and opening and closing books, whereas with a large desk, you can just leave everything out, then easily and quickly direct your attention and cross-reference information.

However, I think having two 30" monitors may in fact be more useful than one 50" monitor for many purposes.

technology is the heroin of our generation. Every once in a while you get a really good hit (like a new TV) but soon the hit just gets you to normal and you start looking for the next amazing thing.

I've got a 24" and it took quite a while to adjust to it from a 20". Personally I think 30" would be the upper limit for me, with the 27" being most suited.

I think 27" inches is perfect. I don't think we really need anything bigger than that, since we can always add an additional monitor anyway. Im sure apple will stay with their current screen offerings for a while now. At least I hope so. Since I plan to purchase a Quad core imac in a year or so.
