I am in the market for a new computer and am debating between the MBP 17" or the 27" Imac. I will be using it for Maya rendering 8 or so hours at a time possibly 2-3 hours depending on what is rendered, Photoshop, after effects, 3DSM, and a few other intensive applications. My question is how well do the Imacs perform for these purposes? Does anyone else use Imac for these types of uses as well? If so what are your results and are you able to render deep scenes ? I do plan on getting as much ram as possible installed to handle the work loads but unsure about the Video cards. I would love a Mac Pro but unable to obtain the $$$ for one. But have enough to get a fully loaded Imac.

Any info would be of great help

Thanks

The top of the line iMac would serve you fine. Because you are such a heavy user you should probably wait for Sandy Bridge to come out - probably the end of this month. If you need it now, go for it, the i7 quad should suit your needs well. You will appreciate the extra screen real estate over the 17" MPB, and until the MP is updated it isn't worth the premium over the iMac.
Peace
