27" screen's resolution--is more less?

My first post on my new i7.

My now 'old' computer has a 19" monitor with resolution set at 1024 X 768. The 27" screen on the iMac is a nice upgrade, but I'm finding its max resolution makes text a little too small to read comfortably. (My monitor is about 3' from my head.) 1920 X 1080 is much more readable...but then I feel like I'm sort of wasting capability. :/ Is anybody else finding 1920 X 1080 is a better compromise? Just curious.

It's one of those things that'll very from person to person. Personally I have yet to come across a monitor where I didn't wish that I could crank the res up even higher, and there are other folks who always complain that they need a lower res. That is definitely one problem w/ LCDs in that they're not as customizable as the old CRTs

Just use the zoom feature to read fine text.

In Word(or Acrobat) just increase the page size to +100%.

In Safari you just have to press +

Or you can use the mouse zoom: hold and scroll up

Where's the button with the apple symbol on it? It's not on the wireless keyboard.

They removed the Apple symbol, its the button that says command.

Safari has a minimum font size feature, use it. As do many other programs such as mail, adium, netnewswire, and so on. I put mine on 14px and it's great.

I can't comment from experience, since I don't have my iMac yet, but apparently running an LCD screen at lower than its maximum resolution makes everything less sharp, since the pixels need to be stretched or upscaled or something (i'm not too technically informed )
So as another poster mentioned, you're better off leaving the max resolution and then zooming in or making the text bigger, rather than changing the resolution.

Thanks. I'm actually an old school Mac user from the 80's, when my dad bought the first Macintosh. I owned a Classic SE (?) in college and bought the original graphite iMac (remember when colored iMacs were cool?). But the overwhelming lack of software for Macs at the time drove me to the other side. I've been using a PC for almost a decade. But I've been watching Apple over the years and decided to come back for a variety of reasons. It was just a question of when and which machine. I was leaning heavily towards the Mac Pro but decided to wait and see what Apple would do with this iMac update. I was pleasantly surprised by the features (wish it had a better GPU, though), so I took the plunge. It's gonna take some time to figure out the new OS, but I'll get there.

Just set the text to a higher font, like 14, which you can find in "View". Run the max resolution and set the font so you can read text.
