Let's pass the time waiting for our 27" SSD iMacs by helping me out on what might be a stupid Mac novice question (yes, I googled and searched the forums but it did not help):
Is there a specific order of software installation that you can recommend for my new iMac? In Windows it makes an incredible difference, does it on a Mac, too?

These are the programs I will use/run apart from iLife and iWorks:
- Bento
- Caffeine
- Cyberduck
- Delicious Library
- Evernote? - What's the point with iCloud?
- EyeTV
- Flip4Mac?
- gpg
- Google Chrome
- Growl
- Roxio Toast
- SpellCatcher
- StoryMill
- VLC
- VMWare Fusions (XP/Win 7 emulator)
- VPN Client
- WDTools (for Western Digital mobile Drives)
- XStream Ripper

- Microsoft Office 2011
No flames about that, please - it's the price to pay for an Apple at a Windows-based university. I am nonetheless a bit worried about it. Ever since I installed Office 2011 Academic my early 2010 MacMini Server (2.53 GHz Core 2 Dua, 4 GB) and MacBook Air (Late 2010 11" Ultimate) show lots of Beachball of Death paging. How can I installit without making it such a resource hog?

I am also looking into
- Camtasia
- Aperture
- Final Cut Express
- Frizziz or Fritz4Mac
- VUEScan or SilverFast Ai
and a YouTube Downloader

What is the installation order you suggest (if it matters on a Mac)?
Is there anything important missing?
Are there any redundant programs you recommend skipping?

Thanks for your advice.

No, the install order does not matter.

And how does installing applications in a particular order affect Windows? What/how does it affect?

Startup speed, general performance and the number of blue screens are directly affected by the installation sequence. See for example
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/driver_install_order
Quote: "Some devices may not function properly if the drivers are installed out of order."
Especially for older OS like Windows XP, finding a good order for installing drivers/software is an artform. That time-consuming nuisance is one of the reasons for my switching to a Mac.

Quick question? Are you doing bootcamp or just VM Ware. If I was you I would just do bootcamp. It will make your programs run a lot smoother. You won't have to worry about what order you install your programs.

VMWare:
1.) speed will not be an issue I worry about: My 27" iMac is the top of the line (3.4 GHz, 6970M 2 GB GPU, , SSD+2 TB HD, 12 GB RAM) and the typical Windows applications that I use are not resource hogs.
2.) I want cut & paste but sandbox security, so virtualization is a must.
