Im trying to determine whether the full os is available when the 27" is running in target display mode. The fact that the imac needs to be booted to do this, would indicate that is the case, but when I asked the question in a store I was told that it was not.

to be more specific, If I have apps running on the imac and enter 'target display mode' do these apps continue to run? can I remote desktop into my imac when in 'target display mode'? can I run vmware with server software in the imac when in 'target display mode'? Logic would seem to say 'yes, of course'..but I can't find any definitive information either way.

Can someone with a 27" and a modicum of technical skill, please advise.

I think about 2 people on the planet have gotten this to work.

Is it like Firewire Target Disk Mode? In that case you are running the computer, but not the OS.

Someone??

Interested whether that works or not... I asked a Genius at the apple store, they had no clue.

yes, the OS is still running.

Just use apple-key + F2 (or maybe it was function+f2) to toggle between the two modes.

I'll search for the video I found a few days back and post it - brb

yeah... the 'geniuses' don't always seem to know much :p

EDIT:
found the video much faster than I thought (still in my history): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5eg6oQLRjU&feature=player_embedded
it was COMMAND+F2 to toggle between target-display mode and the full OS

hope that helps

Yes. I just verified I could VNC into the iMac while it was in target display mode and everything works as expected. Apps continue to run as normal.
