27" Too Big?

I'm nursing my 2007 iMac along waiting for a refresh from Apple so I've been interested in reading news anything that pertains to that update and I've noticed something. Just about any comment thread mentions the hope for a re-release of the 24" iMac and most state that the 27" is just too big. I have a 24" and when Apple released the 27" I almost bought it just because it was 27 inches. Granted I'm not pressed for screen room but I would think bigger is better as long as you have desk space for it.

I've even seen posts that people would gladly sell their 27'ers just to get a new 24 so I assume from that it's not just that they want a new Mac but that there's something flawed in having a bigger screen. Anyone care to weigh in on the matter? Thanks.
 
I have a 27" iMac and I have no problems with the size. I think it's just a matter of taste.

I would agree that Apple should have a 24" model. 21" is way too small for me personally, but if you really don't like the 27" model, you don't have any other choice.
 
Wel I'm one waiting for a 30" iMac. 27" just isn't big enough. Although I'd love to see an iMac REDONE...... although who knows how big that would have to be.
 
I personally like the 27". It's great to have that much space, although I don't really need it. Between the 24 and 27, I think I'd probably pick the 24 though.
 
that's a good question. If the 24" isn't coming out now, then the answer is obvious; 27" - but if it is, I have no idea which one I should go for.
 
I was so used to having my 20 inch G5 iMac for years and years, and when I first got the 27 inch I felt it was really really big, but not in a bad way. I was very impressed with the immense amount of space I had available to me. Now after a full years' use of the 27 inch, I'm very used to it and think I could even go bigger if I wanted. I think it's the perfect size actually. The physical size of the 27 inch iMac isn't actually that much bigger than the old 24 inch iMacs thanks to a smaller chin. It's about the same height and only a couple inches wider. The screen real estate you get with 2560x1440 is amazing. For someone who just assume you tabs on a full-screened browser, it might be too much, but I've always just had multiple windows open at once and used expose.

I found when I had the iMac that I was struggling to see both sides of the screen. I prefer the look of the 16:9, but for doing work, the 16:10 ratio of the 24 inch was a better screen shape for me, personally.
 
I wish I had the money and desk space for a 27". The 24 ACD I have right now is kind of pushing it.

See that's my thought too. I know before the iMac got updated with a 27 inch screen there were rumors of a 30 inch since at the time the Apple Displays were at 30" and I was hyped about it.

I'll end up with a 27 when they get updated (or larger if it goes that way) but I was just curious why people seemed kind of disenchanted with the larger size. I do agree they need to come back with the 24 and the i5/i7 option for them.
 
I bought a 21" last year cause I felt 27" wouldn't been too big. I might go with a 27" this year though, but I would be really comfortable with a 24".
 
Went from a 24" iMac with a 20" 2nd monitor to a 27" iMac and 27" Cinema Display. Love the Real Estate. I use Parallels so I have Windows running and several documents open and displayed at the same time.
 
In my mind, the 27" iMac is the best computer Apple makes and provides the most bang for your buck. Keep in mind, they sell the Cinema Display alone for $1,000!

I went from a 15" MBPro to the iMac and thought it was big (in a good way) at first, but once you get used to it for a week, it doesn't feel all that big anymore.

A 27", 2560x1440, LED backlit IPS display is a pleasure to behold everyday. Go 27"...:D:apple::D
 
resolution?

I see lots of people coming on here to state that they wish for a 24inch model, but i dont know what resolution they would plan on setting it at. The 21" model has a res of 1920 by 1080, and the 27" has 2560 by 1440. What resolution fits between those 2? :confused:

i know apple wouldnt make a 24" model with another 1920 by 1080

I'll second this one. I've was enamored with Apple's 30" display ever since I saw my first one years ago. I've been nursing my 20" G5 iMac along for over 5 years now just waiting for the stars to align and deliver that 30-incher, but I'm doubtful it will happen this year. For my situation, it would be perfect, but I can understand how 27" (let alone 30") would be overwhelming for some.

Just personal preference, I guess.

Oh and i forgot to add in that the current models have a display ratio of 16:9 so that means that if apple did go to 24" again they might put the ratio back to 16:10? :confused:

I just dont see the 24" model coming back :(
 
It's really not too big in my opinion. It might take some time to get used to it, it took me about three or four days, but after that it's just like any other monitor.
 
like I already stated in the last silly post on this...

How is the 21" "Way too small" over the 24" when you are only talking about 120 pixels of height? maybe 1" physically. 1080 vs 1200?

Im not trying to defend the choice (I have been using 24" 1920 X 1200 monitors for the last 10 years and prefer the 16:10) -- but the difference is pretty small.

We all had this same argument when I bought my first large screen in mid 2001 -- went from 21" Viewsonic G810 @ 1600 X 1200 to a 23.5" Sony GDM-FW900 @ 1920 X 1200 ($1450). Ran it on my G4 533 with a GeForce 2MX. People were "thats too big!". Hooked up a second 17" screen too.

Worked fine.
 
i want a 32 or 34 inch with 3000 by 1800 pixels.

my primary use for it is tv/dvr/net surfing.


i have a 2009, 27 inch with the better graphic card and a 3.06 c2d.

they should consider one with a bigger screen.

oh and mine is wall mounted.
 
It's very much a personal decision. The 27" screen looks a LOT bigger on your desk at home than it does on the counter at the Apple store. That said, the resolution is incredible, and makes sitting close to such a gigantic screen actually become a pleasure. You will be disappointed by any video you ever watch on it, as it will all be magnified and have room for improvement. Small price to pay for such awesomeness.

I do like the 27", but I found it really slowed me down in some ways. Can't zip from one end of the screen to the other with just a flick of the wrist anymore. Takes more forearm, eh?

So you tweak the mouse speed to get it to move farther faster, but then you tend to lose sight of the pointer because, well, you flick your wrist and now the damned thing could be anywhere.

Web browsing on the 27" isn't always so great. You have to OPTION+ a lot to get things to fill the screen, and by the time the text is fills the screen (or close to it) the small images are pixelated.

Guess you can tweak the default text size in the browser, but the relative proportions of text and graphics will change when you do that. Don't know. It's a little kludgy.

But, all that space to put menus is worth the trade. The single 27" is better than any dual-monitor setup I've ever used. If you've ever had a menu pop up on the monitor you're NOT currently staring at, you might get what I mean there.
 
If you have a 27" iMac and feel it is too big, pack it up and ship it to me. I'll send you my iPad in exchange! :lol:


Honestly I was going to buy a 27" this week and give my 24" to my children to use, then I saw the MBP refresh and have decided to wait and see what they do to the iMac. My guess is pretty much what they did to the MBP .... newest CPU/Video/Thunderbolt.
 
I would really want a 27" screen.

Stuck with a 13" screen for 3 years... must have bigger screen...
 
I want my iMac Refresh NOW!!

I cannot wait for the iMac refresh. I want the 27"iMac like yesterday!! But I'll probably have to wait a while first, to see when they do the refresh second, once the refresh is done will wait til Mac OSX Lion is pre-installed in them. I planned on getting an iMac this summer but it looks like I'll have to wait til the Fall for the iMac refresh as well as the Mac OSX Lion release and pre-installation
