I was hoping the new update would go back to the 24 inch imacs but they didn't.

1) So, for a video editor, is the 27inch imac needed? Wouldn't I be better off getting the 21inch and a dual monitor for the video playback? Any recommendations for a 2nd monitor? Not looking to spend a lot.

2) Also, I was hoping to spend about 1400$ on my new imac. Is getting the $1200 imac with a 8gb ram update a good choice? Or would the $1500 imac be that much better for video editing? Could I eventually upgrade the cheaper imac to an i7? Would that be needed?

Thanks for the help! I also edit with FCP and After Effects using a Panasonic GH2 and sometimes work with other HD cameras.

I'd only get the top 21 inch. You'll not have as much resell value on that one unless you have the top of the line. It seems to be doing well in tests too, just barely bellow the 27 inch and two 21 inch monitors is certainly great for video editing. Get the most power you can afford and add monitors later...they only get cheaper as time passes.

You can't upgrade anything but the RAM later on. With exception to the hard drive but that requires a fair bit of terror and tinkering.

I'd say the best value for your money is either the $1199 model, the $1699 model or the $2199 model.
The $1499 model isn't worth it because it's only another $200 for the 27" screen with the same specs.

I'd recommend you get the $1199 model or the $1999 model with the i7 option ($2199).

Also either way, I recommend buying the RAM from a third party and add it in yourself rather than from Apple. Check the prices out here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2011/DDR3_21.5_27
Apple charges $600 to go from 2x2GB to 4x4GB, but from OWC it's only $200.

The two 21.5" iMacs have two RAM slots whilst the 27" modules have four. I'd get the $1199 model and pick up 2x4GB modules ($100) from OWC and send the 2x2GB in for a rebate (if they still offer that).

That's not true. Both 21.5" an 27" have 4 ram slots.

Ah is it? Why does Apple only offer at most 2x4GB modules for the 21.5" models?
