290x AMD GPU Drivers not working from Boot Camp.

Hi,

I'm going mad here, I've tried everything I can think of. I'm getting a code 43 for the R9 290x in Windows 8.1. I've got a 5k iMac.

Apple and Microsoft support don't know what to do with me.

None of the available drivers work for the card and I've tried re-installing Windows.

Anyone else have this problem?

Hi,

I got round this problem by using Windows 7 and installing the drivers manually instead of letting Bootcamp do it during the Windows install.

Everything works fine now.

Windows 7 isn't really an option for this install.

Why Apple engaged AMD to provide their GPU's I will never understand....

I did try Windows 7 for testing but had endless issues with USB drivers in the slipstreamed ISO and could not get the install to go.

How did you get around Windows 7 installing the drivers automatically - did you just cancel the install?

So I've installed Windows 7, cancelled the bootcamp installer and installed the graphics driver manually. One part of the install failed but the Catalyst Control Center and the driver installed OK.

Then I decided to run the Bootcamp setup.exe - Guess what?
The ATI driver and software installs without any problems and so does everything else.

When did Apple start using AMD/ATI GPU's? Was it before or after the departure of Mr Jobs?

It also doesn't have proper support for ultra-high-resolution displays. For that, you need Windows 8.1. You can avoid the awful Metro UI by installing a start menu replacement. I use StartIsBack, which although it is not free, has been perfectly stable and replicated the W7 menu to a T.

Price and availability. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M was little more than a slightly faster 780M that is available in the non-Retina iMac. The 970M-980M weren't ready while Apple was developing the 5K iMac; the AMD R9 was available and certainly less expensive (as AMD GPUs are across the board) so Apple decided to run with it.

Again, this is probably something that would not be an issue with Windows 8.1.

Apple has been using ATI/AMD GPUs off and on for years, dating back to the PowerBook G4 and first Intel MacBooks. Prior to the 5K iMac, the last systems to use them were from 2011 and included the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Mini.

Also, AMD released updated GPU drivers specifically for Boot Camp installations. They installed fine on my MacBook Pro and should do the same on the iMac.

Weird. Have a go at downloading the beta drivers at the bottom of this page. They're basically the same as the Boot Camp ones but without the useless WHQL stamp. Couldn't hurt at this point.
 
I've just completed a clean Windows 7 install and set it up ready to go.
I will wait until the Windows 8.1 side is confirmed working and then upgrade.
 
I have the same problem. iMac 5k i7 with 290X. You can install windows but you won't be able to do anything that requires any video acceleration because the driver is a generic display driver not a driver for the 290x.

You keep getting the stupid error listened above.

From what I have heard, some people have gone through a truly epic journey to try and jury-rig drivers to work and some have been successful but very few have gotten the 290 to actually work. It might have been one person.

One person with applecare actually got their machine swapped out with a machine with a 295 (which does work) I believe because apple threw their hands up not knowing what the hell to do.

There's probably at least eight threads all over the internet discussing this issue. Nobody has a real fix.

Some of the fixes don't really fix it.

Anyone? Beuller? Beuller?

the issue here is that the thread you responded to was from a year ago, I think at this point if you install windows 10, this will solve the problem.

The OP was talking ab out win8.1, even though he got around the issue with Win7. Windows 10, may very well resolve this issue.
 
I'm running Windows 8.1 and the system either (1) runs with "generic microsoft display driver" or (2) AMD 290X but the 290x driver fails to work.

So it's basically "update to Windows 10 or it won't work at all?"

Do you have a 290X in your iMac?
 
Can't install Windows 10.

I download the windows 10 installer, it goes to 100%. Then "creating windows 10 media" gets to 100%
Then: "Setup is Starting" alongside "Windows Setup: an unknown command-line option [/DynamicUpdate] was specified".

Anyone have a fix for this? One site said to make sure all windows updates are up to date which I have.

Still the same error...
 
Way past time update that might help some users:
I updated my system to 10 finally but the issue still remains.

The author of the website bootcampdrivers.com is a independent developer who is creating specific packages with updates graphics drivers for Boot Camp users - one package focuses on gaming, another focuses on other uses etcetera.

This developer has had some contact with AMD (some as recently as this month) and the error seen so often with is actually been pinned down somewhat and is being investigated by AMD [finally!]:

  • M290, M290X and M390 users see 'Error 43' in Device Manager upon installation and are unable to use the driver. This is an issue with the driver firmware and we are awaiting on AMD to issue a fix.

  • At the site of the bootcampdrivers developer there is a thread that discusses one users attempt to get it going and it actually did work for them:

    The nearest it seems is that due to a re-branding exercise at AMD the actual driver that works with this is an AMD Radeon HD 7800 series if you can get it going.

    I did manage to get it going (sort of) but it's not ready for prime time for the average end user.

    Just a shame Apple specced these things.
