I have a 2G 8GB iphone that I bought used. I have since jailbroken and currently running 3.0.

The thing I have noticed is that after overnight charging my battery only shows 87% charged. In addition, I'm out of juice by 1-2pm with minimum usage (maybe 8 text messages and 1 phone call).

I'm not running any background apps that I know of. Push is off. I have no data plan. I'm pretty sure no app is using Wifi unless prompted by me. My only solution at this point is to delete apps one at a time and see if one of them is the culprit by monitoring the resulting battery life.

Can this be due to the fact that I bought a 1st gen iphone that had never been activated? Would the battery be negatively affected by the fact it sat on someone's shelf?

edit:
TIME BATTERY %
0733 95% (right off the charger)
0855 73%
0933 64%
1040 45%
1117 38%
1230 16%

What kind of sim is in the iPhone?

I have noticed that when running 3.0 in my 2G iPhone and I use my GoPhone sim in the iPhone, that my battery will litteraly drop a % every minute or so. Once I inserted my real iPhone sim in the 2G iPhone, the battery would be fine.

I also noticed that if I enabled airplane mode, the battery would easily last a week.

Then I figured out that it has to do with 3.0 and it's settings with unofficial sims being used in the iPhone. I entered the APN settings such as wap.cingular and the battery stopped draining so fast. One of the "enable MMS" threads here has all the settings you need.

Are you just using your iPhone as an iPod Touch then?

Using it as a pay as you go phone without an edge data plan...unless i pay for it that month.

Thanks. I'll check into it.

Thanks. I'll check into it.

Also, you will have to make sure you can disable data once you add the settings because the iPhone still uses some data even when email and push settings are off. This can be expensive. I use SBSettings in Cydia (jailbreak) to disable edge. You can still make calls, just no data will get through.

Can't find the setting to edit my APN. I even tried resetting network settings. Is there an app for that?

Solved

Used the Iphone Configuration Utility found on the Apple Support page.

Here are the new stats for my battery life:

0755 100% (much cooler to the touch off the charger)
0942 100%
1110 100%
:D

Thanks for the help.

Great! See, now the iPhone knows the correct settings for your sim card.

Before I figured it out, I had to keep the phone in airplane mode to keep the battery from draining in 4-6 hours. During a phone call, it would drop 10-20% in just a few mintutes.
