I came home from work today and plugged my 2G, 20GB iPod into my G5 like I normally do. About an hour later, I come in and notice that it has started the disk check, with the screen showing the spinning disk and the magnifying glass. Kinda strange, but I've seen it do weird things, so no worries. I let it run through its check and get the spinning disk with the checkmark sign. Great, I thought!! But then, while it's still plugged in, it starts the disk check again.

By this time, I knew something was up. The iPod was not on my desktop, so no way to eject it. So I just unplugged it. Spinning disk with magnifying glass still showing, so I hold down play/pause and menu to reset it. It resets just like its supposed to. The apple pops up and then the menu, just like normal. But then I notice all of my songs are gone!!! Oh, boy.

So I plug it back into my computer. Nothing shows up on my desktop and the iPod starts the disk check again!!! It's in the process of doing a disk check for the second time and I bet I will get another checkmark saying everything is ok.

I really perplexed!!! Any ideas from anybody? Is this bad news?

You have a backup of your music? If so use the ipod updater to re-do your ipod.
I have a 1G that just went weird. If i fill it now beyond 3.16GB it crashes; corrupted hard drive on it :(
My advice: You've had that iPod for a while now, consider upgrading; the new ones are a lot better than our old 1/2G ones. :(

Pardon my ignorance, but how do I re-do it if it won't show up on my desktop? I've never re-done one before.

have you got the most recent ipod updater from apple?
If not, get it here.
This program can "see" ipods even if they don't generally show up in the finder. You can then click the "restore" button.
Hope it works :)

Wish I had a G5!
