My son has a dead LG on our AT&T family plan and wants to start using my old 2G iphone, but without the data plan. I've read that there are a few ways to do it. Questions:

1. Has anyone been successful in getting AT&T to put an Internet data block on an iPhone?

2. Has anyone successfully used this method?

Can't you just remove the password from the data network password box to achieve the same effect? The iPhone will be unable to connect to the network and you'll get identical messages to the ones displayed using the second method.

ATT will allow you to use an Iphone 2G without a data plan. Activate it with your sons sim via itunes and then call ATT and remove the data plan and have the data block put on the phone.
I know this first hand because I did it.. Or... you can restore the phone via Itunes, then jailbrake and unlock the phone via redsnow and not call them... its your choice. Still you will have to make sure data is turned off..

Thanks... I'll give it a try with AT&T.
