2GB worth the extra £120?

Im getting a 24" iMac at christmas and i was wondering if it would be better to get 2gb or get 1gb from somewhere esle and risk breaking my imac completly.. (I know the ram would work out at 1.5gb)

Edit: I will be mainly surfing the net and instant messaging but sometimes be designing, movie editing, photo editing and a little bit of gaming.

Do not worry- you won't break your mac adding mem. Save a couple bucks (pounds, as it were) and go for the 1 gig after market.

Sorry, let me ammend that. You won't break your mac adding memory unless you try to add it with a hammer. If you are sensible and work slowly, you won't have any problems.

but i heard you have to take out the screen to get to the ram and hard drive.. and doing that takes some tape off and apple can tell if u have done that and to be honest.. im not too good with taking apart machines and putting them back together in working order.

A 2GB upgrade from Crucial will set you back £219.71 so the £120 upgrade from Apple doesn't sound too bad.

I doubt you would get £100 for the stock memory on eBay.

That's not true, RAM (unlike the hard disk) is extremely easy to access.

However, there are only two slots and the standard configuration for the iMac is 2x512MB, so if you're adding the RAM after buying you'll have to replace both with 1GB sticks and hope to sell the RAM that you take out. In my opinion, you might as well just pay the £120 for Apple's upgrade.

I would go for the 2GB of RAM when ordering the iMac from Apple. According to prices in the U.S. (http://www.crucial.com & http://www.datamem.com) it would appear to be cheaper, and easier, to just buy the RAM from Apple.

Good choice. And you'll have a better resale value with 2gb over 1 or 1.5gb down the line.
