2nd monitor for iMac?

I'd be grateful for any help or suggestions...

I have a reasonably new (6 months old) 20" iMac - 2GHz Intel Core Duo with 2G - and would like to add a second monitor. I know where/how it all connects as I have been experimenting with an old Xerox monitor that I normally link up to a PC laptop. When I connect it to my iMac the picture is rather faint: obviously not as good as the iMac image but also significantly worse than with the cheap, old laptop. Inevitably, I am told by my local Apple dealer that I need an Apple monitor and I am sure that it would be just dandy; however, it would also cost £400... Can anyone tell me whether or not I can get good results with something for less than that? Any dos, don'ts or experiences to share?

well i connect my 24 inch iMac to a a Lacie electron blue 19 inch CRT and it looks fantastic

my old man has a 17 inch iMac connected to a 22 inch Samsung flat screen -- couldn't tell you the model unless i call him. -- but that look even better

maybe it's the colour profiles that are making it look faint? -- wrong resolution/refresh rate combo?

any modern monitor will work. i know allot of people who use the basic dell monitors

I would just like to comment that my CRT is connected via VGA to my iMac -- so the analogue itself is probably not the problem ... just the monitor and/or settings on it

for under $400 CND which is under £200 equivalent you can get A LOT of really good stuff. That said, it's been my experience that economic factors distrort those direct price comparisons.

what you should get out of this is that, like the above poster mentioned, almost any monitor will work -- you don't need to buy an Apple one -- though they are sexy and look REALLY nice next to an iMac
