I would like to upgrade the 250GB HDD to a 2TB one. I'd like to know whether any of these three hard discs are compatible.

Seagate
2TB ST32000641AS
1.5TB ST31500341AS (drive that had firmware issues before but now is resolved)

WD Caviar Black
2TB WD2001FASS

Instead of tearing open the iMac, simply buy a larger external firewire 800 drive and boot from that. You won't notice much of a speed difference.

Are you sure that 2 TB drives will work? I know some computers have a drive capacity limit. Do the iMacs?

Has anyone tried a 2 TB in an older iMac?

My iMac came with a 250GB WDC WD2500AAJS so anything bigger is an upgrade.

intel/G5 iMacs have no drive limits

So throw any 3.5" SATA drive in you want.

G4 iMacs are different, depends on when they were built.

Just wish Apple made the new iMac's hard drive user replaceable.

It's not easy for average Joe who has never been inside a computer before. It would be a lot easier if they just move it to near RAM sticks and add a hatch there like for RAM.

It isn't about it being hard. I just don't want to spend that much time to just upgrade 1 component. Memory can be upgraded in less than 5 mins. It would take about 50 mins to upgrade a hard drive.

I had my pre-unibody MBP's hard drive upgraded for $30 + hard drive. Not bad considering the GPU can go any moment.
